(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @[email protected], @[email protected], or @[email protected].

Honestly, I think this is a good thing. I am old enough to have witnessed the last time we Europeans were pissed at the US during the time of George W. Bush. Back then I hoped the EU would break free from their dependency of the US... perhaps this time it finally happens.

Greedy transatlanticist traitors will see to this not happening.

He could have done all this without being such a dick and if he’d been polite about it other countries would have probably been somewhat understanding, at least in public sentiment. It’s not a good look to claim everyone else is ripping you off. If they were ripping you off you wouldn’t be the richest country in the world.

Also, if everyone else is ripping you off, it makes you look kinda weak.

American culture kind of is weak. We even steal TV show ideas from other countries. we steal culture, and if we make culture then it's monetized. Look at hip-hop culture, it's bound gagged and raped by money whores whether it's street culture making dirty money or CEO pimping artists. They all rape the genuine culture just the same.

Monetization is America's culture.
The entire world is capitalist, but no other country has such a culturally ingrained disdain for non-commercial activities.

This does sound a lot like there is a racist subtext here, tbh. It's also patently false - there is no one "genuine" culture.

As an american who hates this I doubt it anti american. Its anti corporate america and anti trump and anti maga and anti republican and anti all the stupid crap that lead to this.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Both of these feelings will likely mix. People have the unfortunate tendency to stereotype others. :/

Yeah, sure. He actually makes Europe stronger. Europeans avoid buying American products, TESLAS etc... I'm curious where this is going in the long run... sometime he will recognize that his actions don't get him anywhere.

As a foreigner it is difficult to differentiate between them or rather: if the country as whole is politically mainly represented by these things there is not much a foreigner can do instead of being anti american.

Wasn't anti-american sentiment there for decades? Even as a kid in the 70's I heard that americans will have a Canadian flag on their backpack because of the negativity that comes with wearing the american flag. Maybe it's worse now but it's been there for a while.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

The 70s was before my time, I remember the Canadian flag thing though. But as I understood that's more about not wanting to be associated with other American tourists who can behave quite obnoxiously when traveling in groups and taking full advantage of strong cheap local beers and the lower legal drinking age. There is and always was some degree of anti-americanism from the left, but on a political level and not something you'd have to worry about as an individual tourist. The headline is also a bit misleading in that sense, this "anti-americanism" is directed at Trump's shenanigans, not random tourists.

Yes. I mean, it was always there. It now just breaks free.
