I remember when Proton launched it was like magic playing games like Doom and Nier Automata straight from the Linux Steam client with excellent performance. I do not miss the days of having the Windows version of Steam installed separately.

It’s here: our 1.1 release candidate! This is the last set of features for our App Store update next week, and we’ve got some exciting ones for you:

Features and Improvements

  • Brand new search interface, allowing you to search for users or communities (posts coming soon) and featuring a beautiful new result preview
  • Image uploading. You can now upload an image when creating a post!
  • New icon: “Stargazer", designed by Sjmarf
  • Edited posts and comments now display the updated time

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed images all appearing as squares (and, I hope, finally put our scrolling issues to bed)
  • Fixed settings icons not rendering properly on iOS 17
  • Fixed a bug where connecting to instances on localhost was impossible
  • Smoothed out editor sheet animations
  • Fixed logging in before email verification crashing the app
  • Fixed opening posts from URL links crashing the app
  • Fixed swipey action animation and context menu animation trying to run at the same time (ONLY on iOS 17—Apple fixed this behavior generally in iOS 17, there’s unfortunately nothing we can do about it in iOS 16)
  • Clarified error message when trying to log into a private instance

Known issues

  • Tapping a “recent searches" suggestion for a community or user not federated with the current account will fail to load
  • "Official Community" link on some instances federated with lemmy.ml still opens in-browser
  • Items to the right of the spacer in the widget customizer do not initially register taps if the widgets have not been customized since the last build. This is due to inconsistencies in the saved widget config data, and can be fixed by simply moving some widgets around.
  • Info stack does not properly adjust its alignment when it is the leftmost or rightmost element

Cheers, The Mlem Group

All You Need to Know About Book Icons in SVG

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is an XML-based vector image format. It allows two-dimensional graphics to be displayed and interacted with on the web. Book icons in SVG format are commonly used on websites, e-readers, and other digital platforms to represent reading materials, libraries, or other book-related concepts.

Benefits of Using SVG for Book Icons:
Scalability: SVG icons, including book icons, can be scaled to any size without loss of quality. This makes them perfect for use on high-resolution displays and responsive web design.
Editability: SVG icons can be easily edited and customized using CSS and JavaScript, allowing for a consistent look and feel across a website or application.
Accessibility: SVG supports text and titles within the graphic, improving accessibility for screen readers and other assistive technologies.
Interactivity: SVG allows for interaction and animation, enabling more engaging and interactive UI/UX design.
Lightweight: SVG file sizes are generally smaller than raster images, improving page load times and overall performance.
Creating Book Icons in SVG:
You can create a simple book icon in SVG format by writing SVG code or using a vector graphic editor like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape. Below is an example of basic SVG code for a simple book icon:

xml

<svg width="24" height="24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg">
<rect x="2" y="3" width="6" height="18" fill="#ccc"/>
<rect x="8" y="3" width="14" height="18" fill="#eee"/>
<line x1="8" y1="7" x2="22" y2="7" stroke="#000"/>
<line x1="8" y1="11" x2="22" y2="11" stroke="#000"/>
<line x1="8" y1="15" x2="22" y2="15" stroke="#000"/>
</svg>

This code creates a simple, stylized book icon with pages on the left (gray) and a cover on the right (light gray), with three lines representing text.

Using SVG Book Icons:

Websites: Use SVG book icons on websites to represent categories, sections, or topics related to books.
E-books and E-readers: Utilize SVG icons to improve navigation and accessibility in e-books and e-readers.
Libraries and Databases: Implement SVG book icons to visually organize and categorize library and database materials.
Educational Platforms: Enhance learning platforms with SVG book icons to signify reading materials, resources, and assignments.
Tips for Working with SVG Book Icons:
Use a consistent style and color scheme for all icons to maintain a cohesive and professional appearance.
Optimize SVG files to ensure fast load times and smooth performance.
Test icons on various screen sizes and resolutions to ensure clarity and readability.
Consider accessibility, ensuring icons are easily understandable and accessible to all users.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, SVG book icons offer a variety of advantages for web and application design, including scalability, editability, and accessibility. By understanding the basics of creating and using SVG book icons, designers and developers can enhance the visual appeal, usability, and performance of digital platforms and materials.

As I noted within my post, #[email protected] (alternate link), thumbnail generation in Element is an enormous privacy, and security vulnerability. Thumbnails are generated server-side, regardless of E2EE settings. What this means is that the URLs that one sends would be leaked out of your encrypted chats to the server. Here is a notable excerpt from the settings within Element:

In encrypted rooms, like this one, URL previews are disabled by default to ensure that your homeserver (where the previews are generated) cannot gather information about links you see in this room.

I have seen several mentions and articles about using this app to sync game saves for non-steam games. But I have yet to see anyone mention using it instead of Steam's own cloud based save game solution.

The reason I ask is I've been having so many sync errors between the deck and my Linux gaming PC and it's driving me crazy. For example, I just started Cyberpunk2077 for the first time now that 2.0 and Phantom Liberty are out. Put a few hours in from the desktop, then later wanted to play on the couch so I grabbed the SD and fired it up. Only one save had synchronized and it was very early in the prologue. So i went back to the desktop and tried the resync and same thing, will not sync. I read about how too many saves can cause a problem, but I literally just installed and started this game. Maybe 3 or 4 at the time? Up to 6 I think now. So this should be well within any arbitrary sync limits I would think. It's not just this game either. Starfield and Dave the Diver are two others having repeated issues with cloud saving.

Does anyone else use this instead of or in conjunction with steam cloud saves?

Right now, unless someone is linked to an instance directly, the first point of entry is usually join-lemmy.org, and let's face it, it's completely uninviting.

The first few screenshots give off a Rust nerd vibe, and you have a "join a server" button shown to you before you even get to see some short explanation of how the Fediverse works.

In contrast, https://matrix.org/ and https://joinmastodon.org/ (which btw also has this "join a server" shown too early problem, but they kind of go around it by linking a default instance) feel much more welcoming.

Maybe we could have a contest to make join-lemmy.org better? Not just the layout, the wording is also way too technical for the most part and deserves to be reviewed by people with more of a marketing mindset.

We could also have a similar one to make a short introductory video, like what was done by Framasoft (a French non-profit) in this video: https://peertube.fr/w/9dRFC6Ya11NCVeYKn8ZhiD (or probably just reuse that video if there's not enough interest in making a similar Lemmy-focused one?)

Would be really cool to have creative people contribute that way to Lemmy without necessarily coding!
