A Hong Kong court harshly sentenced 45 prominent pro-democracy figures on November 19, 2024, on baseless national security charges that underscored Hong Kong’s abysmal human rights situation, Human Rights Watch said today. The Hong Kong government should quash the convictions and immediately release all of those convicted.

Three judges handpicked by Hong Kong’s chief executive sentenced 37 men and 8 women to prison terms ranging from 4 years and 2 months to 10 years. The defendants were earlier convicted of “conspiracy to commit subversion” under article 22 of the National Security Law for helping to organize or run as candidates in an informal primary election in 2020 aimed at winning seats in the then-semi-democratic Legislative Council.

“It’s now a crime carrying up to 10 years in prison to try and run in and win an election in Hong Kong,” said Maya Wang, associate China director at Human Rights Watch. “The cruel sentences for dozens of prominent democracy activists show just how fast Hong Kong’s civil liberties and the rule of law have nosedived in the four years since the Chinese government imposed the draconian National Security Law on the city.”

Lebensjahr.

Looking for Mentor (for a PhD Candidate) that works with open source and Rust

TLDR: Searching for person holding professor position to officially act as a committee member on a US PhD defense

Hi all,

I'm in a non CS field. I'm doing PhD in hydrology and I'm good at Geospatial Analysis, data analysis, visualization, modeling and such. I really like programming and have been making open source programs, contributing to open source programs and such. And have been learning rust for last 2 years.

For my PhD dissertation I'm doing a project where I'll be using Rust to make a program with compiled plugin system that can do generalized river related tasks including data analysis and visualization. I have professors in GIS and hydrology to guide those aspects, but I don't have anyone on software side to ask questions, or to look at my work. I tried emailing some people I have seen with open source projects on GIS+rust, but no response.

I'm ideally looking for someone that holds a professor position for my committee who is good with either rust, GIS related algorithms development, and programming languages. However, it woud also be helpful to just have someone woth knowledge about such things. In either scenario, credit and authorship will be given.

I appreciate any response even telling where i could find someone matching the above description. :)

Edit: I can also provide my previous projects in GitHub, websites and such before you decide in messages.

Niantic, the company behind the extremely popular augmented reality mobile games Pokémon Go and Ingress, announced that it is using data collected by its millions of players to create an AI model that can navigate the physical world.

In a blog post published last week, first spotted by Garbage Day, Niantic says it is building a “Large Geospatial Model.” This name, the company explains, is a direct reference to Large Language Models (LLMs) Like OpenAI’s GPT, which are trained on vast quantities of text scraped from the internet in order to process and produce natural language. Niantic explains that a Large Geospatial Model, or LGM, aims to do the same for the physical world, a technology it says “will enable computers not only to perceive and understand physical spaces, but also to interact with them in new ways, forming a critical component of AR glasses and fields beyond, including robotics, content creation and autonomous systems. As we move from phones to wearable technology linked to the real world, spatial intelligence will become the world’s future operating system.”

By training an AI model on millions of geolocated images from around the world, the model will be able to predict its immediate environment in the same way an LLM is able to produce coherent and convincing sentences by statistically determining what word is likely to follow another.

Does anyone know why it looks like Pluto has an atmosphere in this picture?

The specs of the phone are bombastic. 24 gigs of RAM for highest variant, 185 Hz support ( and I thought Moto's 144 Hz was the upper limit) but let down by only 2 Android OS upgrades. All major OEMs, even Chinese ones are committing to longer term update support and seeing a phone with such specs being let down by software is a disappointment.

Four50 Grill in North Battleford has amazing burgers - and very filling, you won't need supper after these. The one across is their D'Wiesen burger is filled with saurkraut, swiss cheese, and sausage all on a toasted pretzel bun, with onion rings. The closer one is a spicy pickle burger with a side of Buffalo chicken poutine. It's very yummy, but your daily sodium intake will skyrocket haha.
