With all my cats: I like to do a cat scratch gesture like catwoman from a distance while we all laze around (again, from a distance).

Its like miming scratching a non-existant surface and they intuit that the imaginary surface I'm scratching is them.

Also "we" call scratching "scratcheese" lol

One of my cats needs a pill every morning. So when she hears me get up she meets me at the bedroom door. She and I then play follow the leader (she is the leader, of course) while she shows my all the things she wants to run her face on. Then we watch the neighborhood and have scritches for a few minutes from the window seat. Then she has her pill.

It's the first 10 minutes of my day, every day, and its a damn delight.

I've got a cat that plays fetch and dog that doesn't...

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago

I have one of those too. The cat only wants to play fetch when I want to go to bed, of course.

My dog, Jose, is pretty smart. I like to get him a large variety of treats, and when he’s been a good boi, I place them all down, separated by a few inches, in front of him on the floor, and ask him to pick what he feels like. Pigs ears, Schmakos, custom dog treats from artisans, little biscuits etc etc. I’ll lay down like 6-10 treats in a row, and he will sit there and wait for me to finish, then I just say “alright pick what you like buddy” and he walks over, sniffs around each of them in sequence, then will pick whatever he feels like, pick it up, come over to me and boop me with his nose, then heads to the living room carpet to enjoy his treat. He has never tried to greed more than one, he always thanks me politely, and he always picks a different one each time so he doesn’t get bored with them. I love him so much.

Sometimes, he just asks me for a treat directly though, he will come up to me at my desk, and lightly paw my leg to get my attention, then he stands on his hind legs and does a pawing gesture with his paws which is just begging, and I go “Jose beg beg? Whats up buddy?” And he will walk to the treat bin and then do beg begs at the bin, then we start our picking game.

Not that unique, but one of our dogs loves to play hide and seek with her toys. She will wait patiently in one room while we hide the toy in another. Then we call her in to the room, and it's adorable to watch her searching for the toy. She always finds the toy, though some hiding spots take her longer. Really cute when it's hidden in plain site and she has trouble spotting it.

That's so cute !

I speak with my cats in different languages - Portuguese (L1) with Kika, German with Siegfrieda (when I adopted her I was studying the language).

I like "kneading" Siegfrieda while purring. I call it Kätzrach (Kätzensrache, lit. "kittens' revenge"). She seems to enjoy it quite a bit, too.

Kika on the other hand gets gentle buttslaps since she's rather ticklish so she hates when her fur gets stroked. It's gentle but that doesn't stop the folks here from saying that she's "apanhando" (lit. "being spanked").

Do cats say Meow in diff'rent dialects?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I don't think so. Although a research on the impact of different languages on the pets' vocalisations would be cool.

I was being cute but thanks haha. People just notate is different, like sometimes people joke about Chinese-owned cats saying "Mao" 😹

When Fran wants cuddles you can pat your knees (like a "come here boy!" gesture) and she'll do a BIG STRETTTCHHH onto your leg to indicate "yes please pick me up". Then you smoosh your face into her because she's a cat.

I have one cat who likes to ride on my shoulder and play fetch with bottlecaps.

Ember, three years old: steals the thumb sticks from my controller, but places them right next to it.I pick them up and show them to her and she hangs her head in shame. Then I ask her if she played a trick on Dad

Stormy, just over a year: she lives up to her name she tears through life like a storm and has destroyed many things. My wife has three small Winnie the Pooh stuffies on her dresser. Stormy will sometimes pull them down, but somehow she knows that destroying them would not be a good thing, so pulling them down is as far as she goes.

I taught my dogs to give "Eskimo kisses".

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Same with cats, pretty universal signalling of affection [1/2-sandwich nose to 1/2-sandwich nose] hehe

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

It comes a little less naturally to dogs than to cats.

Sometimes, I have to close my cat in the bedroom if I am on a call for work. When I am done, I open the door and he immediately starts meowing and rubbing my legs. Then he jumps on the bed and begins suckling and kneading the blanket while I pet him.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

We have an Eskimo kiss thing but with our left eyess
