The magic acid simulator button!

Old Internet was better. Way more raw and pure. No algorithms and ads littered everywhere trying to get people addicted to platforms and consume. I would much prefer the left side.

I feel that the decentralized networks of the fediverse kinda bring a similar feeling back. To me at least, this feels like more of a wild west where everyone is brewing their own soup and people wander around tasting from every pot.

maybe because there are way more old people on here... ^^

Oh really? Well then I guess I am a youngster around here. Used to all the kids from reddit.

Do you remember the old internet pop up ads that would play sound and music at 100% volume? And there was no way to mute a tab back in the day (tab browsing was in its infancy), so you’d have to rush to turn down the volume or find that popup and kill it.

Yeah I don’t want those to come back lol.

There were definitely still ways to block pop-ups, and if you were really worried you just left your speakers at 0% volume 100% of the time.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

If you leave your speakers on 100% all the time you're just asking for it.

The popups and auto play videos are just embedded directly into the page now.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

as someone who never really experienced the old internet, all I hear are the positive sides and I feel like the guy in xkcd 239

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

Yeah, but turning down the volume was easy. You just turn the knob on the computer speakers.

I mean we did have to live through the era of popups and really annoying ads. ("Say something!" "Whaaaat?")

LOL but akshully, I am glad.

I feel like I have better context and foundation understanding of technology and software because I grew up while all of it was rapidly changing. Now everything is stagnant, and technology and software are updating to keep draining the capatism tit of tech and not investing in or even allowing actual innovation anymore. Which was welcome before.

Fuck I miss the old internet. Nothing compares

And also, we didn’t spend nearly as much time on old computers than you can now on your phone. Even with a lot of games it would be hard to stay entertained. Now you have thousands of infinite content feeds.

Speak for yourself. I did ~8h sessions with games like Creatures 2, Elite, King's Bounty.

Kids today go outside and still be online instead of being restricted to the basement when chatting to their friends. And they watch series on demand instead of canceling appointments to watch pokemon. They really don't know what fun is anymore

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I bet they've never even bolted across the house and vaulted over the couch because the commercial break ended

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

I don't think their attention spans could survive a commercial.

You're glad you grew up doing underaged girls with CRT monitors, instead of doing underaged girls with smart phones?

Weird flex, but OK.

A 21 inch CRT can keep a large pizza in its box on top warm all Lan.

The good old days when taking your computer with you somewhere built character.

Are you mocking those of us who grew up before both of those generations? imagine going through your whole day and not looking at a screen because you're just out there living in the real world interacting with people all day long everyday.

out there living in the real world interacting with people all day long everyday

Gross.

That looks like the passenger pickup area of an airport, and honestly looks a lot like LAX specifically. Y'know when you'd need a phone to contact your ride and let them know where you are waiting to be picked up
