"Ramadan Mubarak!"

Caracas (AFP) – Venezuela's president Nicolas Maduro accused Washington Monday of committing a crime in the case of a two-year-old girl separated from her migrant parents, who were deported from the United States without her.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has said the girl was placed in foster care to protect her from her parents, who it claimed were members of Venezuela's Tren de Aragua drug gang.

"This is a crime whichever way you see it, taking a two-year-old girl away from a migrant mother just because she is a migrant and a Venezuelan," Maduro said Monday during his weekly television program.

"And accusing her without evidence of being a member of a criminal gang, and using it as an excuse to steal her child, is a crime under any international law," the president added.

In a statement earlier Monday, the foreign ministry in Caracas denounced "the abduction by US authorities of the young Venezuelan Maikelys Antonella Espinoza Bernal, aged two" and called for her immediate return to her parents.

Under US President Donald Trump, the DHS has carried out a crackdown on immigration, deporting thousands of primarily Latin American migrants that it says are undocumented and cancelling the legal status of others.

The administration has said that many of those it has deported are members of criminal gangs, including Tren de Aragua, but has provided limited evidence to back that claim. Lawyers and family members of many deportees deny the allegations.

The DHS did not say where it deported the girl's parents to, but Venezuela believes her father was among about 250 men sent to El Salvador's notorious CECOT prison for the country's most violent criminals.

In a statement Saturday, the DHS claimed the father, Maiker Espinoza-Escalona, was a Tren de Aragua "lieutenant" who "oversees homicides, drug sales, kidnappings, extortion, sex trafficking and operates a torture house."

The girl's mother, Yorely Escarleth Bernal Inciarte, "oversees recruitment of young women for drug smuggling and prostitution," the DHS said.

It said the girl was "taken off the deportation flight manifest for her safety and welfare. The child remains in the care and custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement and is currently placed with a foster family."

The department branded both parents "criminal illegal aliens" and said their expulsion had been approved by a judge.

Tren de Aragua has been designated a "foreign terrorist organization" by the Trump administration, which has paid El Salvador millions of dollars to lock up nearly 300 deported migrants it claims are criminals and gang members.

At least one of them, Salvadoran Kilmar Abrego Garcia, was found to have been wrongly deported, but both Trump and El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele have washed their hands of his case.

Last week, Venezuelan prosecutors said they were investigating the "forced disappearance" of a citizen detained in the United States in January, but whose whereabouts are now unknown.

Good news,
the cause was identified by the Portugal Grid Operator and it wasn't sabotage (see Update in the article)

Due to extreme temperature variations in the interior of Spain, there were anomalous oscillations in the very high voltage lines (400 kV), a phenomenon known as induced atmospheric vibration. These oscillations caused synchronisation failures between the electrical systems, leading to successive disturbances across the interconnected European network.

I heard there were massive blackouts in Spain Portugal and parts of France. If you can still somehow access the Internet, how are you doing?

Hello fellow lemmings

I am a long-time i3 user and have decided to switch to Sway. I have encountered a weird error which has left me utterly bamboozled.

I am using Ubuntu 24.04 which has gone from 20.04 -> 22.04 -> 24.04. It has Ubuntu-Gnome, i3 and Sway currently installed.

The issue

The error that I'm facing is when I'm using Sway, I simply don't have sudo access.

This is what the error looks like

$ sudo visudo
[sudo] password for xavier666:
Sorry, user xavier666 is not allowed to execute '/usr/sbin/visudo' as root on <HOSTNAME>.

When I switch back to i3, my permissions are fine for the same user. I have not done any crazy modifications to the sudoer's file as far as I can remember.

PS: I have added a command to no-sudo xavier666 ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/brightnessctl

The "fix"

I temporarily solved it by adding xavier666 ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL to the sudoer's file.

IMO, I think this should not be required. I don't remember ever adding the default user to the file for all the installations that I have done. (But this is the first time I've installed Sway)

Logs/Outputs

Running sudo -l without the fix (on Sway)

Matching Defaults entries for xavier666 on <HOSTNAME>:
    env_reset, mail_badpass,
    secure_path=/usr/local/sbin\:/usr/local/bin\:/usr/sbin\:/usr/bin\:/sbin\:/bin\:/snap/bin,
    use_pty

User xavier666 may run the following commands on <HOSTNAME>:
    (root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/brightnessctl

When I run the same command on i3, i get this (ALL : ALL) ALL extra line in the output. And when I run sudo -l with my fix on Sway, (ALL : ALL) ALL is present and the permission issue is fixed.

What is causing Sway to remove the root permission for the user?

Note: I'm just asking for the standard sudo behaviour. I'm not trying to run GUI applications as root.

Hey, Privacy community! I wanted to share my personal experience with quitting YouTube, a journey that has been both challenging and liberating.

Initially, I started my deGoogle journey by cutting back on various Google services, but when it came to YouTube, I found it incredibly hard to let go. I tried using alternatives like NewPipe and FreeTube—both fantastic FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) options that allowed me to access YouTube content without the usual Google baggage. However, despite these alternatives, I still felt trapped in the cycle of daily YouTube usage and the addictive nature of the platform.

To tackle this, I decided to take a more drastic approach. I implemented a DNS block using AdGuard DNS and NextDNS, which helped me create a network-wide blocklist for Google services. In the first two weeks, I found myself turning the DNS off occasionally, creating two profiles in NextDNS to allow Google services when I felt the urge creeping back in. It was a struggle, but I knew I needed to break free.

Gradually, I began replacing my YouTube watch time with journaling and diving into topics that truly interested me, particularly various philosophies. After about four weeks, I was amazed to find that I no longer felt the urge to watch YouTube at all! However, I still have my doubts about returning to the platform, fearing it might reignite my addiction and lead me back into a FOMO (fear of missing out) mindset. To safeguard against this, I’ve kept my no-Google filters active in NextDNS.

I also discovered alternatives like PeerTube, thanks to creators like The Linux Experiment and TechLore, who actively post content there. Platforms like Loop, Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Lemmy have also become integral parts of my online life, providing me with a sense of community and connection without the overwhelming distractions of YouTube.

By de-Googling and stepping away from YouTube, I’ve reclaimed so much of my life. While many tout YouTube as a great social platform for mental health, I’ve found the opposite to be true for me. Without the constant distractions and the pressure to consume content that often felt useless, I’ve experienced a newfound clarity and peace of mind.

Now, I have more time to help my mom, focus on my own projects, and enjoy moments of solitude that have significantly reduced my stress levels.

YouTube can be a helpful platform for many, but for me, it was a different story. I initially thought it would lead me to greater privacy and understanding of FOSS services, but instead, I found myself entangled in a web of privacy violations and creepy policies. The community here has been instrumental in guiding me toward FOSS alternatives that respect my privacy.

I’m curious—does anyone else have experiences with quitting YouTube or trying to? I’d love to hear your stories and insights!

The UK government shared contact details of counter-terrorism police and prosecutors with the Israeli embassy during an investigation into protests at an arms factory, official documents suggest, raising concerns about foreign interference.

An email was sent on 9 September last year by the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to Daniela Grudsky Ekstein, Israel’s deputy ambassador to the UK, with the subject matter “CPS/SO15 [Crown Prosecution Service/counterterrorism police] contact details”.

Last August, 10 Palestine Action activists were arrested under the Terrorism Act after a protest at an Israeli weapons factory, and in November a further eight were arrested under the act in relation to the same incident. The email sent by Nicola Smith, the head of international law at the AGO, and obtained through a freedom of information (FoI) request, was sent 11 days after she had met Grudsky Ekstein. It was redacted apart from the subject matter.

Lydia Dagostino, from Kellys Solicitors, who represents some Palestine Action activists, said: “The information disclosed in response to an FoI request clearly raises questions and needs further investigation.

“Why, for example, did the Attorney General’s Office provide the contact details for the Crown Prosecution Service, an independent body, to the Israelis? What further exchanges followed and was there discussions about ongoing criminal prosecutions?”

Dr Shahd Hammouri, an academic and international lawyer, also raised concerns about evidence “which indicates foreign influence”.

A readout of what was discussed at the 28 August meeting between Smith and Grudsky Ekstein was heavily redacted. However, past disclosures have shown apparent requests by the Israeli embassy to the AGO to intervene in individual cases – unspecified due to redactions – and meetings held between the Israeli defence contractor’s representatives and the AGO and Home Office ministers.

In 2023, the Guardian revealed that in response to a redacted request from the Israeli embassy, the director general of the AGO, Douglas Wilson, replied: “As we noted … the CPS makes its prosecution decisions and manages its casework independently. The law officers are unable to intervene on an individual case or comment on issues related to active proceedings.”

Wilson was also present at the meeting in August last year with Smith and Grudsky Ekstein.

A 2023 briefing note for a meeting between Chris Philp, then a Home Office minister, and the Israeli embassy said the CPS declined to attend the meeting “to preserve their operational independence”.

Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, said: “The timing of this correspondence coincides with the ongoing investigation into Palestine Action activists accused of dismantling the […] site of Israel’s biggest arms producer.

“It seems apparent that the Attorney General’s Office has facilitated foreign interference in this case and potentially other ongoing criminal cases.”

In November last year, four UN special rapporteurs wrote to the UK government expressing concern about the “apparently unjustified use” of terrorism legislation against protesters. People arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 can he held for up to 14 days without charge.

The letter from the human rights experts said those arrested in August were initially held for 36 hours, without access to legal representation, before being detained for a further seven days under powers contained in counter-terrorism legislation.

The letter said: “Counterterrorism legislation, including the Terrorism Act 2000 and the Terrorism Act 2006, appears to have been increasingly used in the context of domestic support for Palestinian self-determination and political activism against the United Kingdom’s foreign policy on the conflict in the occupied Palestinian territory of Gaza.

“In particular, members of Palestine Action – a grassroots movement that organises direct actions against Israeli weapons factories in the United Kingdom – have reportedly been arrested under counter-terrorism legislation for conduct that appears to be in the nature of ordinary criminal offences and does not appear to be genuinely ‘terrorist’ according to international standards.”

No one was charged with offences under the Terrorism Act in relation to the protest. The 10 people charged with non-terrorism offences have had their legal support, family visits, healthcare and religious rights limited while in prison awaiting trial, according to the special rapporteurs’ letter.

A government source said: “It has been routine under successive governments for AGO to help embassies get in contact with the relevant authorities purely for purposes of sharing information that could be relevant to a case.

“Decisions to prosecute, convict and sentence are, rightly, made independently of government by the Crown Prosecution Service, juries and judges respectively.”

The Israeli embassy did not respond to a request for comment. Relating to a separate case, an Israeli embassy spokesperson previously said it respected the independence of the British judicial system and “under no circumstances would interfere in UK legal proceedings”.

This is more about getting feedback/criticism for the idea that fedizens should run programs that monitor what they engage with similar to how Facebook,YouTube, or any corporate online service would simply so you can use it to run algorithms for find content you might like.

The key thing is that you only share the your data consentual at this point the data will stay locally stored.

I try to get a pulse anti algorithms crowd and it's hard to figure out if they're against algorithms generically or just specific platforms. People leave twitch because that also pushes people to be more commercial or capitalist.

The idea came up when I built peertube recommendation algorithm I got the part built for tracking watch time on peertube videos and I thought "track YouTube watch time and engagement to make peertube suggestions".
