Don’t overthink your choice—remember that you can still consume content from all other instances and communities, no matter which one you choose as your home.

I find the framing here very problematic. Both because passively "consuming content" is inherently problematic and because Lemmy just doesn't have sufficient "content" to enable that, thus leading to quick disappointment of users looking for that kind of experience.

And in general it does matter with instance you chose. Not to the point that new users should worry too much about it, yes, but there are distinct cultures between different instances and it is a strength of the Fediverse that instances are not just faceless pieces of infrastructure, i.e. pipes to content, but rather thriving communities with real people behind them.

Maybe I am ignorant, but Serbia seems like an even more unlikely candidate right now?

The audio is very quiet, it's probably a microphone or post processing issue.

Castropod is cool, maybe you can try to figure out why it doesn't properly federate with Lemmy and file some issues on both sides?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

Yes that is afaik possible via https://fediseer.com/

That's partially what https://fediseer.com/ does.

The same dev also made a CSAM scanning tool based on AI image recognition.

https://snikket.org/

It's just an easy to setup XMPP server, so you get full federation out of the box.

It would be ok, but a bit lonely, no?

Better look into Snikket.

Ice storage?

Not really possible to tl;dr, but the interviewed professor makes an analogy between Modern Monetary Theory and how the impact of migration is measured wrongly in classic economics / by the state bureaucracy (making it look bad when it is in fact often a net positive for society).

Contas XMPP para todos! @[email protected]

But even without that you should really (!) not use Pidgin or OTR for XMPP.

This is the first release of the community port of Descent 3, released as open source software under the GPLv3 license on April 16th 2024.

Abstract:

With current policies the Earth is on track to a warming of around 3 °C above preindustrial temperatures, a level of heat our planet has not seen for millions of years. Ecosystems, human society and infrastructure are not adapted to these temperatures. Due to non-linear effects, the impacts will be much more severe than just three times as bad as after 1 °C of warming. Land areas will continue to warm much more than the global average, many regions twice as much or even more. Extreme heat will become far more frequent and a major cause of human mortality, making large parts of the tropical land area essentially too hot to live. In addition, extreme rainfall and flooding, droughts, wildfires and harvest failures will increase in frequency and severity. The destructive power of tropical cyclones will also increase. Sea-level rise will accelerate further, and the destabilization of ice sheets will commit our descendants to loss of coastal cities and island nations. The risk of crossing devastating and irreversible tipping points of climate and biosphere will rise to a high level. This 3-degree world is not an inevitable fate, but action to prevent it must be swift and decisive.
