Without the Republican New York, it looks like a late 80s map with stronger democrats.

Working full time with a long commute sucks. I also think my depression is coming back. Oh well. Anime time.

Picking up again after last month's thread, here's some manga I read and anime I watched this month:

Manga:

Nothing. I was looking for some good story-driven plots, especially in new releases on like r/manga or mangadex, but there's only so many loser guy, gyaru gf and even worse generic isekai or two page chapter web comics you can read. Maybe I should look at Chinese or Korean ones, but I do not like the long strip format.

Anime:

Aa, Megami-Sama! (2005)

Almost done with season 1, will definitely be continuing with season 2. It's got a totally unique chill, while earnest vibe that most anime period do not. Maybe something like ReLife? Once Belldandy's sisters are introduced, the show becomes more fun, with magi-technological hijinks happening on the regular. A

Genshiken (2004)

Picked this one up on a whim, expecting it to be weeb brained nonsense... and it is! But it's also shockingly good in character writing and remains grounded as a slice of life, yet narrative-driven anime. I'm on season 2 and tbh the first one was better (even ignoring the significant artstyle downgrade), and I heard 3's also not as good. But I am enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. A

Full Metal Panic (2002)

I read the manga a few years ago after playing SRW V and loved it, but remember being disappointed by the sequel and dropping FMP Sigma. Coming back to the anime, all the things I loved about the show are there. A hilarious comedy with unhinged main characters and "End of History" era lib / Steven Seagal movie logic? You bet. A

I also started Scrapped Princess (2003) and it's good so far, but too early to comment on it. I've also been re-watching Azumanga Daioh, and it's still the GOAT.

I now have a full time job plus a long commute, which means... more time for reading manga while half-asleep? Huh?

Anyway the last thread of this kind was in July, and since then an anime season has finished, so might as well do it again.

For me:

Manga:

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (2005): Parallel to watching the excellent adaptation, I have picked up the manga and, much like Kaiji, finished it in a concerningly short time. Koji Kumeta has a bone to pick with the world... with everything in the world. What arises is a very entertaining ruthless critique. I'm fairly sure he's either still a leftist, or used to be one and got disappointed. However, he is also nationalistic. A political mess, mostly agreeable, sometimes dropping horrible takes - but a fantastic manga which never loses its bite no matter how many chapters you are into it. It's also less horny than the Shaft adaptation. A+

√Paradise (1991): Being curious about Kumeta's early work, I read this short manga of his, which is basically the Yakuza games' cabaret club side-plot in manga form. Not too interesting, but a decent enough read. B-

Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san (2017): Nagatoro is a decent romance manga with a pretty bad beginning. It ended a few months ago, but I have caught up only recently. Not much else to say, really. B

Shiroyama to Mita-san (2021): Nice comedic romance/slice of life manga about two (mostly) uncool people. Fun, but have not finished it yet. B+

Anime:

Aa-Megami Sama (2005): I had read a large chunk of the manga before, and it's just as fun as I remembered it being. The romance stuff isn't too strong, but the hijinks are fun. The source material being from the 80s means that many of the usual tropes didn't exist yet... or were being invented. A-

Fullmetal Alchemist (2003): Almost done with this show, it's been really good overall. Strong characters and storytelling, and the anime original plot... I can clearly see why it's controversial, but I like it. Good show. A

Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! (2024): The only seasonal I didn't drop. Story-wise very conventional, but the character writing was good. Anna Yanami in particular, being one of the strongest female leads in recent anime history. It had a few tone-unfitting scenes that felt tacked on for the horny audience, but overall decent show. B

Western Animation

The Owl House (2020): Very fun show, with some blatant inspiration from many recognizable source materials, western and Japanese. King is a king. A

Slayers is great, especially the first two seasons, before it went anime original.

Oh hey, my family did this back in early 2010s Italy. The local gold and silver dealership proudly displayed a copy of L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics near the counter, that was fun.

New Windows feature... same as a virus?

Iowa man hauls grain, becomes involved in a minor diplomatic incident. Meanwhile, someone else on the ship wonders if he's fated to become his own ancestor.

Yeah, it's a decent site. Their reviews are a good way to find out what seasonals are interesting, which are horny nonsense... and sometimes praise is given to shows that are both.

I've been having an itch for Disco Elysium recently, but this time I was also wondering: what did other people think of it?

Was there any Youtube or possibly streamed playthrough you enjoyed watching? Did any communist theoryhead play the game for an audience? Any unique points of view?

A country like Argentina, beyond its meat industry, isn't really a country with a significant impact on the environment - but this will hurt the local population.

By design even, considering what the aim of the current government is.

Venezuela's economic crisis really began after oil prices fell drastically in 2014 and the west used Chavez's death/Maduro's election to increase pressure on the country via sanctions which for example made buying parts to maintain oil refineries difficult. Before that, it was doing about as well, or better (of course, failing to become independent from oil exports) compared to the other countries in Latin America.

Argentina was already in a crisis for the last ...20 years-ish, but this acceleration of the crisis happened in a week even as Milei backpedaled on some potentially damaging promises like cutting trade with China.

They will probably lose territory to Poland as well if this keeps up

Sigh

No they won't. It was a fringe position in the Polish far-right before the election and now that the libs have won it's even less likely to happen.

Or, the fighting will eventually stop and the current status quo will remain permanent. It's hard to tell.

It's less wacky politicians (though there undoubtedly are some that actually believe that) and more nationalist propaganda - showing Poland as an island of righteousness against the removed west or something. It's an attempt by the far-right Law and Justice Party to gain support via culture war and shocking people into disgust and hoping they back you based on that. Even at the cost of pretty blatant lies.

It works on my family, at least in part. 😕
