When they get to jaspers house you hear them say, "where is he we know he came here a few weeks ago" they had followed him there once and returned on the hunch that he may have came there.

oh wow! i have seen this movie over a dozen times and never heard that! thanks!

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Such a fucking underrated movie thanks for bringing this up I might watch it again

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

it came to mind while i was watching the news last night with the conflict going on, just made me think of the 'uprising' scene in Bexhill (which was obviously written as a direct comparison to the gaza situation anyway).

Love the movie, my all time favourite

I still remember burning the DVDrw and printing out the cover, all these years later. Wierd memory to be so engrained.

That movie should have gotten way more accolades, such a fantastic film.

Also, District9 kinda always felt like it had a bit of the Isreal/Palestine conflict feeling to it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

That’s cos D9 was about apartheid so you saw a modern apartheid state and saw a correlation.

Neil Blomkamp is South African. D9 was about the group areas act that removed people from their homes into townships all over South Africa.

Kinda funny that my memory of it is that rips were available before the movie hit theatres here.

Yep, I lived with 4 other guys at the time and we were all so excited to put it up on the massive trinitron TV. Man that tv... God of War never looked so amazing.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I’m pretty strict on movies (5/10 = a solid movie, didn’t hate, will probably watch again, 6/10 = did some notable stuff, 7/10 = excellent, will absolutely watch again, 8/10 = outstanding, brought some new ideas or just did everything incredibly, 9/10 = masterpiece, 10 = ???)

I gave Children of Men a 10. I don’t have many 10s.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Out of curiosity please rate;

  • Sunshine
  • Requiem for a dream
  • Event horizon
  • A.I.
[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh gawd I’m not on my computer so I can’t find my IMDB but from the best of my memory:

Sunshine: 7

Requiem: 10

Event Horizon: 6

A.I.: Unrated because I don’t remember anything about it hahaha

I might have Sunshine and Event Horizon swapped, too. But Requiem was a 10 for me.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ok well I'll go watch children of men, but you gotta freshen up on A.I. haha the above films are all 8+ for me, requiem also being the only 10 for me I think. Children of men is a solid 9 as I recall, but it's always subject to change!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’ll check out A.I. again. It was kinda boring when I first watched it, but I was pretty young when it came out and it wasn’t my style of movie. I think it would be now.

When I was younger I watched The Prestige and that was extremely boring to me, but on a rewatch I couldn’t keep my eyes off it. That one’s a 9, teetering towards a 10 now.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Interesting, can't say I remember what The Prestige is about either. Damn it man when am I going to watch all these films haha

A.I. is definitely slow for a Spielberg film, but I think it really benfits from the slow initial pace, and overall slow arc. Gives you time to really chew on how the events and actions and what they mean to us now, and in the future. And it's gorgeously shot. My God it's a beautiful film just on a color theory basis, let alone set and costume etc.

Ok one more film, speaking of color:

What dreams may come

(9.5 for me)

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh shit, my most recent high rating: The Skin I Live In, 9/10. Holy fucking dick, very confusing and mortifying film. Presented perfectly and conceptually unmatched. Not for everyone… pretty much every content warning possible.

Loved it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Content warnings keep me paying attention that's fine by me. I'll add it to the list!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Aha! Let me know what you think. I found it… fuck. Just fuck.

Also plugging movie-web.app, a web site I use if I don’t care to have the highest quality ever. Some of the things are actually quite good quality. Many movies with subtitles don’t have subs, from what I’ve seen. But if I just wanna do a rewatch of The Critic while I’m WFH, it’s a great site to just pop it on.

(I was originally going to say Freddie Got Fingered but that masterpiece deserves 1080p with low compression. I love you, Tom Green.)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ok the movie was pretty great, thanks for the recommend! I'm already referring friends haha

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I’m happy you liked it! Each reveal, my partner and I would just slowly turn our heads and stare at each other for a sec… and when the big reveal happened we both were like “fuuuuuuuck”

If you like that kind of story telling (confusing beginning but makes total sense at the end) and haven’t already seen it, I can also recommend “The Death of Dick Long”. It’s directed by one of the Daniels (of Everything Everywhere All At Once and Swiss Army Man fame. (And the video for Turn Down for What))

If you choose to check out The Death of Dick Long, that’s deeeeefinitley a movie to go in blind to, and it’ll make total sense why hahaha

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Good to know! Thanks

Logged in, remembering that I now have a password manager lawl

I gave both Sunshine and Event Horizon a 7, actually.

I’ve added What Dreams May Come to my watchlist—never saw that one!

The Prestige is about MAGIC. I find it to be a masterpiece.

Looking at my account, some highs:

Being John Malcovich: 9

The Lighthouse: 10

One Cut of the Dead: 9 (if anyone is reading this and hasn’t seen it, do NOT look anything up beforehand, and watch past the credits. GO IN BLIND. That is VERY important.)

Full Metal Jacket: 10

Dancer in the Dark: 9 (it even made me fucking cry, which nothing ever does except the ending to The Best Show Ever Made, Six Feet Under)

The Pianist: 10

Funny Games (American): 9 (highest rating for a horror movie from me, I think)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I swear I replied but the comment just disappeared.

Grab some tissues for What Dreams May Come... its by far the most emotional response I've ever gotten from a film. Even before Robin Willims died. It hits even harder now due to the mental health themes throughout the film.

The lighthouse!! Damn yes that's such a good film jeez I forgot about that too.

Story: when I worked retail looooong ago, we had a big meeting in the middle of the store where we all stood in a circle and they asked us all what our name and favorite movies are.

One girl was like “hi I’m Samantha Newhire and my favorite movie is What Dreams May Come.”

The manager exclaimed, “WET DREAMS MAY COME?!”

Samantha reiterated: “WHAT dreams.”

We all started cracking up.

Hahahaha classic workplace cum joke!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I was astounded, as one of my first jobs, like… isn’t that an HR bad thing?

But everyone was laughing (probably because we were all teenagers) and the manager was probably very embarrassed.

I should add the manager was a lady and wasn’t up with recent movies. I’m pretty sure she was really embarrassed after saying that, but I dunno.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Fucking thankyou. 10/10 is metaphysical perfection. Was that smash burger from the guy with the cough really metaphysically unimprovable? Fucking really, Dan?

5/10 is worthwhile and respectable. Or it should be.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Much love. I rate games and albums the same way. Some of my favorite games, movies, and albums are 6s from me. I’ve rated things 9 that didn’t even really enjoy (Tár got a 9 from me and did not at all click, but I thought it was a masterpiece for whatever sense that makes.)

I hate most professional reviewers so much. Their “6 is shit and less is even more shit” scale is idiotic. I’ve got some 3s and 4s that I love… fuckin Terror Toons is a 2 and I couldn’t love it more.

Like reviewers, is Atomic Heart REALLY a 9-10?! Is Starfield a 9?! Fucking bonkers world in reviewers’ minds. DEATHLOOP a 10?? the fuck

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Just remembering it brings me to tears at that one scene near the end

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Fish's? Do you mean fishes?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

(Fish is a proper name in context)

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

But Fishes would still be the proper plural. Fish’s is possessive

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

You know what? You're right.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Fisheses’s
