I really don’t want to. I work in the film industry. I feel like 🏴‍☠️is like cutting the branch you’re on for me but I can’t afford to keep all those subscriptions, especially when the studios are fuxking us with sand on salaries and making the trikes last all year long. So far, I started soft with movie-web.app for some shows. If they keep on pushing us I will break. It’s not stealing if the other solution is racket.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I don’t like doing it, and I would be thrilled to throw my money at a single service that allows me to stream anything I want at high bitrate 4K. I’d actually be willing to pay a pretty high premium for that. Money is not the issue, it’s the quality of service. I genuinely wish there was a way to pay for a service that benefitted the film industry while providing a quality service to me. Until that’s the case, I’ll continue sailing on a ship that gives me the highest-possible quality content.

Hell yeah. I'd pay $300 a month if they provide everything over 6 months old and never take shit out of the catalog.

I'd be super happy not to have to maintain my own catalogs.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yo man let's not go crazy, $300 a year would be on the high end of acceptable for that. The costs to keep more data available when you own the licenses are quite low as a percentage of total operations, so keeping old content up should be the norm instead of something to be lauded. You don't get a cookie for base competency.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

Oh, I'd be willing to pay less. If you have full cable, balls to the wall and most of the streaming services you could get up around that range. It's ridiculous amount a month to pay for entertainment. But if you look at what you get for that, It's a 300 lb turd with a couple of gems here and there. If they all put their licensing catalogs together in one place they could probably make a hell of a lot more money than trying to nickel and dime everybody individually.

Piracy is and always has been a service issue. When a high quality, convenient, affordable service is provided on a consistent basis without endless bullshit, I have no problem paying.

When it constantly feels like I’m being bled dry for every single cent I have just to watch some TV…. Well, arrrrgh

I buy the blu ray versions of stuff I want to support

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

If pirating is easier than paying for it then why am I paying for it? Note I have been paying for Netflix, HBO, Amazon and one/off Hulu and Apple but they’re all pushing the limits and password sharing is the only way to make it worth it. If I can’t share the price (like sharing phone plans) then I won’t pay. I don’t want to pirate, I’m happy to pay them but there are limits.

I subscribed to a pack for "most streaming services in my country" because I earn enough money now and wanted to try being honest. But I will very probably not renew it, I pay 50€/month, but still use Plex almost as often :

  1. The web apps suck, the mobile ones are often worse (laggy, contrast changes while watching, lack of features ...)
  2. Some shows are not available in a decent quality : in France we have Kaamelott, owned by Canal+, they probably made an intern upload the episodes so it's only available at 360p
  3. They try to control what you watch : the "continue watching" section of Netflix has been randomly placed between line 1 and 4 for a while now, seemingly just to push their bulshit recommendation algorithms that will me watch yet another cheap copycat
  4. Some "premium" movies are not part of any subscription (eg. Puss In Boots 2)
  5. Some show may not be available anywhere when shady exclusivity contracts expire (eg. "Au service de la France" was only available through piracy last time a friend tried to watch it) ...

Sooooo ... I was ok with the services sucking but I can't be okay with them so obviously not trying to improve.

It's also incredible how I was pirating everything else when I was a teenager (video games, books, audio, ...) and managed to stop almost immediately when I received my first salary.

I've been a land lubber for too long, back to sea bois.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 9 months ago

You pay for x number of simultaneous streams it shouldn't fucking matter who the hell are using it, it's still x number of simultaneous streams.

But hey streaming was good while it lasted and a VPN is cheaper after all.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I feel like we invented streaming to return to cable, it's the same fucking shit.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago

Saw this coming when Netflix was the only game in town. Corps will enshitify everything when they meddle with shit long enough

[–] [email protected] 26 points 9 months ago

And I'll keep enjoying my lifetime Plex pass.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Rumors are out that they're gonna try to enshitify Plex too.

Not saying run away, but maybe keep Jellyfin handy.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago

Jellyfin go brr

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I store my media library on a truenas server, all I have to do is boot up a jellyfish VM and point it to the same filepath.

I will be experimenting with it to see which I prefer and so I have a backup if plex goes to shit

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Exact same setup. I used to leave the jellyfin container there, but off. Now I leave it on. I just have so many custom tweaks in my music library for id3 tags and things so not really looking forward to that part of the migration. For now I've been sorta used ng them interchangeably.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Same but unraid.

Plex is better at figuring out naming issues.

JF lacks a global lookup so you have to sort your own DNS.

But then again, JF doesn't sell your watching habits

I have em in parallel ATM.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Really as long as plex doesn’t try to crack down on locally hosted media, I’m not worried.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

I think that would pretty much end them.

I think we're in for pre-roll ads. More invasive pushes to get us to purchase content from partners. Theyre already selling what and where we're watching. My guess is the different streaming services will be really interested in where our eyes are if we're not their customer.

My biggest worry is plex seeing when we're watching stuff before it's available. Let's say the streaming companies continue to decline and piracy continues to increase, If the MPAA decides to renew its fight against piracy they might very well have a database of what and when we're watching everything.

Right now there's not really anything they could do about it at least in the US. But right now isn't 5 years from now on this data is going to live on.

It's not that hard to picture a change of events where you're watching a Netflix exclusive show and they line up that you don't have a Netflix subscription. Putting numbers to intellectual property sale losses without paying is a pretty good way to get laws made.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

Kodi goes brrrrrr

[–] [email protected] 17 points 9 months ago

And this is why I'm using Plex more

[–] [email protected] 13 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

That's fine. I'll set up a VPN server at my house, and have my friends and family use it to access my accounts. We'll all look like we are signing in from the same IP.

It will also give them direct access to my media library.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago (1 children)

You monster! Won't you think of the shareholders?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago

I think about them regularly, while polishing my guillotine.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 9 months ago

The golden age of television is dead.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 9 months ago

They don't realize that they don't have the power of Netflix (who this unfortunately worked for)

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Every company out there is talking about record values with their enshittification I'm just over here like, I haven't had a streaming service subscription in 3 years now unless you count YouTube premium and a few subscriptions to content creators on Twitch but I don't really count them cuz it's not a subscribe to get access to content Styles subscription. Like there's only so much the everyday person can take before they just start canceling Subs and then they get no money out of them

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Do so, because the ones who do want it will cancel, and the others will keep paying. its to stupid to not react on these kind of stuff, like we do, and keep paying to watch series that last 2-3 season max + ads + price increase and no password sharing. Don't you see it?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

What do you do with a drunken sailor?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I shut down my subscriptions to every service last year. The only one I have is prime that I pay for because the streaming was a bonus on top of what I was originally paying for. And PlutoTV and Tubi because they're free.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Prime kind of gets you. Anymore if you don't have it, shipping is about as fast, you may have to pay a few bucks. But then Amazon will give you discounts and try to get you to renew your subscription with massive discounts.

Honestly, I have Prime now for the video service more than for the shipping.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yeah the shipping is now what 2-3 days instead of guaranteed 2 day. So kinda pointless when you get 3-5 day shipping free as long as you spend $35. I only get Prime when they throw in a free trial to an order I already have.

I've barely used the video service. There are so many cheap/free ways to pirate and have everything from everywhere all in one place these days. And without the risk of ISP letters or lawsuits that torrents had in the old days.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

True.

I'm working on setting up a media server again, and expanding my media collection.

It's just a bit of getting started, and making it work seamlessly.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Disney is banning password sharing on its streaming services, following in the footsteps of competitor Netflix.

In an email to Hulu subscribers on Wednesday, the company said it would start “adding limitations on sharing your account outside of your household” beginning March 14.

The move was hinted at by Disney CEO Bob Iger in August, who said the company planned to address the issue of password sharing in 2024.

“We certainly have established this as a real priority,” Iger said on Disney’s fiscal third-quarter earnings call.

Disney’s updated user agreement terms came after a successful password-sharing crackdown by Netflix, which led to an explosion in new subscribers as password “borrowers” were pushed into creating their own subscriptions.

Correction: A previous version of this story misstated the day for Disney’s upcoming earnings call.

Want Disney explicitly cool about it before?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago

So was Netflix at one point.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

No they weren't. It's just a front to get you to buy in and accept them as the good guys. Corps just bait and switch. All that matters is stock ori e. Whatever makes it go up is what they'll do.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Interestingly enough, 2/3 of those are subs I dropped within the last year or so based on a lack of quality/content for what they cost (never bothered with ESPN, NHL games are easy to find). Seems like streaming is starting to collapse a lot quicker than TV did.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Likewise, just cancelled Disney+ and Hulu last month, along with Paramount+, and Netflix.

Only still have AppleTV+ because it's still cheap. And then Max because it's included in our cell service, and Amazon for the shipping, but I don't really use either, and am looking into the feasibility of dropping Prime, if I can convince the wife.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

AppleTV+ is still cheap where you live? Here in Europe it went from 4,99€ to 6,99€ and I think they just raised it to 9,99€. They have some great shows but VERY little content all in all. And at a doubled price which now matches all the other services (all around 10€ each) it is just not worth it IMO.

I might get it for one binge-month in the future just to watch Severance season two though. Or… just get it elsewhere…

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Hey, my SO and I really loved Severance and watch it in my Jellyfin server, which I set up so they can connect from anywhere. I'll add season 2 the moment it launches. I would be happy to give you acess to it if you want to, just let me know.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

That is so nice of you, thank you for the offer! I’ll try to keep it in mind once its out. 😊 And yes indeed it’s a brilliant show.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Not sure. It's $9.99 normally but I think she's got a discount somehow (teacher? Or some kind of bundle?)
