I'm going to go with 'not dying' as the achievement of the year.

Sounds easy but boy, has it not been.

Had heart failure in 2022, and at some point in early 2023 it turns out I had a stroke and that seriously fucked up my head and destroyed my vision (I went meme-levels of cross-eyed).

2024 was recovery and uh, was not the smoothest. But fuck it, I'm almost normal and I didn't completely torch anything and so, yay.

Gosh I'm so sorry. Glad you are better. Mind if I ask how old you are that this happened to you?

Best as I can figure what got me was some delivery food, lol. The virus that damn near killed me is not especially common, and the usual means of transmission is fecal-oral.

So, some horribly gross restaurant employee was probably sick, went to take a shit, and didn't wash their hands, though not like that can be proven.

....I don't get delivery or eat out anymore.

That's a pretty good achievement!

I shot my shot. It didn't go as I hoped. But I tried the thing (starting a business) and now I ~~can~~ have to move on.

Same, but at least we tried to do the thing and can move on to some other thing.

Oddly enough while dedicating all my attention to my new business, my old one that is nearly completely passive picked up. Had I just focused on that instead of a new startup I would have been better off. But at least all hope is not lost.

I started to regularly work out. It's amazing what the right hormones can do to your brain and you start to care about your own body again.

Went back to therapy when I knew I needed it instead of trying to "man up" my way through it.

Got back on track with diet and exercise, to an extent. One of the last things my grandma said to me before she died was, "You look like you've lost weight, good for you."

Life hasn’t been thrilling overall but I suppose I’m proud of where I am professionally as a web application developer.

I’ve been at my current job for a handful of years now and I finally have some cred; I’ve used it to push a lot of structural changes to our codebase and cut down on lots of nonstandard / custom code as well as repetitive code blocks.

One small thing has been getting back into Magic: the Gathering (a strategy card game). I play every Friday and I used to be one of the best players in my area until Covid. After we started playing again, I had lost my edge. I put in a concerted effort to up my play recently and I've been coming first or second almost every week (out of 8-10 players most weeks).

It's just a small and unimportant thing overall, but it has made me feel good and it's been a nice medium-term project with an easy-to-measure goal
