Has there been a major spike in user registrations or any other metric? I've never seen something "go viral" like this on lemmy before.

IDK what voidposting is but beans I think I remember

It was kinda unfunny tbh :/

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

Oh, it definitely was

Beans, star trek, beams, off the top of my head. There's been others. It happens a lot.

Let's not forget voluntary constipation, the first topic I remember really consuming the site.

The OG Lemmy meme is shower heads.

I'm relatively new to lemmy, so i guess i missed all the other events

There will be more, don't worry. We enjoy the silliness.

Welcome. We also have something like r/place here: https://canvas.fediverse.events/

I'm relatively new too, but welcome! We're happy to have you ☺️

I’ve never seen something “go viral” like this on lemmy before.

I think they are just trends that start becoming popular because people are bored. At least, that's how it can start.

I imagine for every user that's like "that's cool!", there's another user who's like "alright time to avoid Lemmy for a while", so perhaps there is not much to glean from the metrics.

Am interested in any data too though, if it's there

Yeah, i love cats and /c/cats but i had to block them for a few days just to see something other than voids.

Sometimes lemmy can just be silly.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 weeks ago

Personally, i loved voidfest. I spent more time on lemmy to catch them all!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I did the same. Is it over?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 weeks ago

It is never over.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 weeks ago

Stupid things going viral for no reason like that just seems like a healthy platform.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 weeks ago

Couldn't say, but it did cause me to unfollow the cat community I was following because my feed was unbrowseable outside of void cats.

I'm just seeing them go viral on Lemmy. If they were going viral outside of Lemmy, too, that might cause an uptick in user registrations. Hell, some of the previous meme fads weren't even new to Lemmy. Beans aren't new or exclusive to Lemmy. Neither was pondering the orb, nor are the voids.

I didn't know that even happened. Must've occurred in the void.
