Back in my teens that was basically common "knowledge". And that's Central/Eastern Europe.
Extremely popular. That rumor spread across North America like wildfire without any Internet to help it along on its journey.
I heard that in Poland as a teen, around 2005.
Was that only a rumor?? Everyone accepted that as a fact.
It was a world wide rumor with many variations. There are other artists that get thrown into the rumor as well. It's reached urban legend status at this point.
