I think it’s more that people were wondering how he’d sidestep reality. The debate highlighted how he changed his views once trump picked him, and Vance knew he was being watched by trump.
One doesn’t willingly and knowingly ally oneself with a dementia-addled geriatric and expect there to be any element of reality to be involved.
