Google has announced a significant change to its Android operating system development process, moving all development work to internal branches. This shift means that the public will no longer have visibility into the development of upcoming Android versions until their official release.

Beate Zschäpe hat nach Informationen der "Bild"-Zeitung während ihrer viertägigen Flucht im November 2011 insgesamt zwölfmal eine Nummer der Verfassungsschutzabteilung des Thüringer Innenministeriums angerufen. Die Kontakte der NSU-Terroristin zu staatlichen Stellen werfen neue Fragen über mögliche Verbindungen zu Sicherheitsbehörden auf.

Laut "Bild" wurden die Anrufe aus geheimen Akten und durch Aussagen mehrerer Insider bestätigt, die mit dem Fall betraut waren. Auch die frühere Vorsitzende des Thüringer NSU-Untersuchungsausschusses, Dorothea Marx (SPD), bestätigte gegenüber der Zeitung: Zschäpe habe "zehnmal oder mehr" beim Verfassungsschutz angerufen. Wer genau am anderen Ende der Leitung war, ist jedoch bis heute unklar. Marx erklärte laut "Bild", sie könne sich "nicht erinnern".

Bereits vor dem Abtauchen des NSU im Januar 1998 hatte der Thüringer Verfassungsschutz offenbar erwogen, Zschäpe als sogenannte V-Frau anzuwerben. Diese Überlegung sei zwar verworfen worden – offiziell wegen mangelnder Eignung –, doch halten sich Spekulationen über informelle Kontakte bis heute. In Sicherheitskreisen wird seit Jahren darüber diskutiert, ob Zschäpe möglicherweise als Quelle geführt wurde oder gar im Besitz von Insiderwissen war, das sie bei ihrer Flucht nutzen wollte.

On Friday, an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles was fired without explanation in an terse email from the White House Presidential Personnel Office shortly after a right-wing activist posted about him on social media, according to a person familiar with the matter. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were concerned about potential retribution.

That followed the White House’s firing last week of a longtime career prosecutor who had been serving as acting U.S. attorney in Memphis, Tennessee.

The terminations marked an escalation of norm-shattering moves that have embroiled the Justice Department in turmoil and have raised alarm over a disregard for civil service protections for career lawyers and the erosion of the agency’s independence from the White House. That one of them was fired on the same day a conservative internet personality called for his removal adds to questions about how outside influences may be helping to shape government personnel decisions.

Walid Ahmad was a healthy high schooler before his arrest in September for allegedly throwing stones at soldiers, his family said. Rights groups have documented widespread abuse in Israeli detention facilities holding thousands of Palestinians who were rounded up after Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack ignited the war in the Gaza Strip.

Prison authorities deny any systematic abuse and say they investigate accusations of wrongdoing by prison staff. But the Israeli ministry overseeing prisons acknowledges conditions inside detention facilities have been reduced to the minimum level allowed under Israeli law.

Israel’s prison service did not respond to questions about the cause of death. I am looking for some recommendations on how to secure the data of my physical servers (against physical theft), that I am about to set up. I am new to selfhosting but have a few years of experience running Linux on a desktop.

My usecase is a simple debian(?) server at home with Paperless ngx and Tailscale for when I am away from home. 

The question is how to encrypt the data while still being able to keep the server updated.

Coming from Desktop my first thought was to simply enable FDE on install. But that would mean supplying the password everytime the server needs to reboot for an update. Could someone provide some insights on how often updates to debian require a reboot? 

My second thought was to use an encrypted data partition. That way the server could reboot and I could use wireguard to ssh in and open the partition even when I am away from home for a longer time.

I am open to other ideas!

In response to a comment in another thread where someone asked if anyone was keeping track of all of the illegal and unethical crap being pulled by the Orange Fascist-In-Chief and Melon Husk, I am posting this as a P.S.A. and resource for everyone finding it difficult to remember every crime. There is at least one journalistic source still committed to the ideal of integrity in the face of fascism. That this beacon of the fourth estate is a satire website is a sign of the timeline we have found ourselves in.

Beirut (Lebanon) (AFP) – An Israeli strike on south Beirut killed at least three people on Tuesday, Lebanon said after Israel announced its second strike on the country's capital in a fragile four-month truce.

The attack that came without warning at around 3:30 am (0030 GMT) during the Eid al-Fitr Muslim holiday. It came after Israel struck Beirut's southern suburbs, a bastion of Hezbollah support, on Friday after issuing an evacuation warning.

Lebanon's health ministry said the strike killed three people and wounded seven others.

An AFP photographer at the scene said the top two floors of a multi-storey building were destroyed and that debris covered the street. Panicked residents poured of their homes as rescue workers helped the wounded.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the strike and called on his country's international allies to support "our right to full sovereignty".

The Lebanese prime minister, Nawaf Salam, said the attack was a "clear breach" of a ceasefire deal that largely ended more than a year of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

Without identifying the alleged Hezbollah operative, Israel's military said it "acted to eliminate him and removed the threat", just days after striking the southern suburbs in response to rocket fire from Lebanon which it blamed on the Lebanese militant group.

Hegseth’s visit to the Philippines comes in the midst of a critical mid-term election, scheduled to be held on May 12, that is functioning for the elite as a referendum on the geopolitical allegiance of the Philippines. The tariffs, spending freezes, and volatility of the Trump administration have thrown into sharp relief the question of Manila’s loyalty to its former colonial ruler. The Marcos administration, functioning as a proxy of US imperialism, has brought the Philippines to the brink of war with China.

The opposition to Marcos is headed by the Duterte family, which has sought to improve relations with China by distancing Manila from Washington. Over the past month, the Marcos government has overseen the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte and the arrest and extradition to The Hague of her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, on charges of crimes against humanity. The current political situation in the Philippines is deeply unstable.

Hegseth announced that the Trump White House was lifting its funding freeze on $500 million in military funding to the Philippines committed in the final year of the Biden administration. However, hundreds of millions of dollars in USAID grants, for malaria eradication, educational improvement, and HIV/AIDS prevention, remain frozen and are likely to be scrapped. The release of military funding is seen as shoring up the political prospects of the Marcos administration slate.

Clearly supportive of the Marcos administration, Hegseth declared, “There is a very real reason why our first trip and our first visit is here to your great country,” to which Marcos responded, “Your visit to the region, and especially the fact that you have come to the Philippines as your first stop, is a very strong indication and sends a very strong message.”

Der Unfall passierte, als auf dem Parkplatz des Supermarktes in Kirn viel los war. Nach Angaben der Polizei war eine 81-jährige Autofahrerin mit ihrem Kleinwagen vorwärts gefahren und hatte dabei eine Fußgängerin übersehen.

Die Passantin, ebenfalls 81 Jahre alt, geriet teilweise unter das Auto und wurde dabei schwer verletzt. Sie kam mit einem Rettungshubschrauber ins Krankenhaus. Dort ist sie laut Polizei jetzt gestorben.
