You can still use Wine-GE in that case, just run it from the terminal like normal Wine.

Edit: best to use a separate WINEPREFIX to your existing Wine install.

Wine-GE can be used with Lutris and other launchers. Proton-GE is it's equivalent for Steam. You can use the ProtonUp-Qt app to download and install these for your appropriate launcher. Once done, select the GE version as the runner/compatibility tool in your launcher.

Have you tried running it using Proton-GE / Wine-GE?

I've seen a few people complain about this, maybe worth chipping in their bug report: https://programming.dev/post/11199512

@fl42v is on the right track. This is a common issue that occurs when restoring snapshots, the subvolid in your fstab might not match the subvolid that's actually present on the disk.

Run btrfs subvolume list / and check that the subvolids match. Also run blkid and verify that the UUIDs listed there matches your fstab.

Paragraph 3.1.5. expands on that though:

To transmit, send or upload any material that contains viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time-bombs, keystroke loggers, spyware, adware or any other harmful programs or similar computer code designed to adversely affect the operation of any computer software or hardware.

I would say create an NTFS partition and use that. NTFS on Linux has been pretty reliable with the new in-kernel NTFS3 driver, especially since recent kernels. And on macOS, you can use the Tuxera NTFS driver, which is also pretty reliable (FWIW, I've been using this for many years now without any issues).

Now here are some alternative options, and why NOT to use them:

  • exFAT: While this should work out-of-the-box on both Linux and macOS, unfortunately it's not a reliable FS and not meant for usage on internal drives. exFAT lacks several data integrity features found on modern filesystems, such as journaling, data checksums, atomic writes etc. Basically you can't trust exFAT with your data.

  • APFS: There's an experimental driver for Linux, but it's considered quite experimental, so I wouldn't recommend it. Paragon also makes a paid APFS driver for Linux, but I don't have any experience with it. Personally, given how new APFS is, I wouldn't recommend using Paragon's driver. NTFS on the other hand has been around for decades, is far more widely used and battle-tested, and is well understood by third-party driver developers.

  • HFS+: Support on Linux is mediocre at best. In theory, it's supported, but filesystem checking is essentially nonexistent without a lot of manual work, and it has issues sometimes if the filesystem was not cleanly shut down. Performance is also not particularly great, and the driver is not widely used with means it's more likely to have undiscovered bugs.

It's a model with a screwed aluminum case, meaning I cannot unplug the battery when I don't need it. How long does it last?

Considering that it's a 10-year old battery, it would've already degraded significantly, even if it wasn't being actively used. If battery life is important to you, you should first consider getting a replacement battery.

As to how long it'll last, that can only be answered by you as it depends on which distro you're going to use, what DE/apps you'll run, and your actual usage patterns/workload.

Is there anything apple does better than linux that deserves I don't nuke it?

Adobe CC, or multimedia stuff in general. And the fact that you can run MS Office natively. But if you don't care about that, then just nuke it.

You can absolutely use an enterprise distro at home. Ignore the trolls about "It's all too old" or "it doesn't have X software". I don't care what version vim, GNOME or pretty much anything is, as long as I can open the core tools I need.

It's not trolling. There's a very legitimate reason to use a distro with new packages and that is hardware compatibility - especially if you're on a recent laptop, and you want all features working such as WiFi, flawless suspend and resume without battery drain or crashes, working Fn keys, or you want to make use of all the power management features in your processor (eg see all the recent AMD p-state driver advancements).

Newer packages (specifically: the kernel and mesa/vulkan stack) are also important for those who are gamers, as several performance improvements, bug fixes and compatibility fixes are made with each new release. For instance, just take a look at these performance benefits of the new ntsync driver:

Finally, even productivity users who don't care about gaming can benefit from recent system packages - consider all the recent improvements in filesystem drivers such as btrfs and ntfs3, and the addition of the new bcachefs driver with kernel 6.7 which is a godsend for anyone running a tiered storage setup.

Also, the entire Linux community has been buzzing with the release of KDE 6 - just take a look at all the new features and improvements - such as much better Wayland support with tons of bug fixes, HDR, ICC profiles for individual monitors, color blindless correction filters for making the desktop experience better for people with protanopia/deuteranopia/tritanopia... there are some very legitimate improvements and use-cases here. How can you just wave all this off as trolling?!

So just because a distro with old packages suits your needs, doesn't mean that everyone else is trolling. There are legit good reasons why many home users prefer leading-edge distros like Fedora, Arch, Tumbleweed etc.

They said new nVidia GPUs. Your Quadro P3200 is five years old now.

I've got an M1 MBA - it's fast for sure, but the issue isn't the processing power, it's the RAM. Basemodel MacBooks, like the one I've got, still come with only 8GB RAM which is barely enough for macOS alone, never mind running Windows on top.

Neither do most phones these days unfortunately. The ones that do have them are not mainstream phones, which means the chances of a fully working custom ROM for them is next to zero.
