Mac mini $500 and refurbs are cheaper.

Not really surprised. I bought it and it didn’t seem all that improved over the original version. It was a cash grab that failed.

It’s a television commercial… (in the voice of Frau Farbissina)

There was a group that was great at it nearly 100 years ago, and even those guys couldn't get it done in a few months. Properly genocoding a people doesn't happen overnight. Isreal has just been oppressing until recently so the genocide thing is going to take a bit longer.

I have to endure a meeting at my company next week to come up with ideas on how we can wedge AI into our products because the dumbass venture capitalist firm that owns our company wants it. I have been opting not to turn on video because I don’t think I can control the cringe responses on my face.

Aw. Sad to hear. How is Darrel doing?

The game changer about this ruling is that the prisons can no longer charge their often 80% commissions on each call. This is going to make the “for profit” prisons crazy. (State prisons too).

I don't totally understand why root isn't just a configurable thing on Android devices. I get why it might not ship with access to root, but why do you have the hack the damned thing to get access?

Damn, I just bought one of these too.

So how was it?

Sorry for running late on this one... Please drop some book club nominations for October (preferably not 1000 pages as we are getting started a little late).

Since it's spooky season I'll nominate John Dies at The End by Jason Pargin. It's an awesome horror/sci-fi with a sharp sense of humor.

If you are up for the idea, how would you like to see something like that structured? I read a lot and would love to discuss.

Alien/Aliens is a given for most people. I have been watching Event Horizon during the spooky season for years. What are some of your favorite books and movies with a horror/psychological thriller lean?

Someone mentioned this film in one of our other discussions. I vaguely remember seeing it many years ago, but really couldn't remember many of the details, so I put it on this weekend. Hot damned if it wasn't so much better than I remember. Maybe the world we live in today feels a lot more relevant to the film then when I had seen it before, but I would gladly declare this film a masterpiece of it's time that holds up today. Don't let the newer remake besmirch your perception of this movie. It hits on several levels. Thinking of the context of the film, it is not difficult to see the concern that the auteurs of the time felt over the possibility, or even likelihood of nuclear war. If you haven't seen this one, it's worth your time.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the film.

I know most of us have seen it, but if you haven't (or it's been a very long time), this is your assignment this weekend. Watching this film with the reverence that it deserves will leave a lasting impression on you.

Wired is not pleased with Amazon's sci-fi offerings. Personally, I thought Upload was decent.
