Former Oculus designer and founder of ModRetro, Palmer Luckey, is set to release a new retro handheld gaming device later this year, aiming to compete with the Analogue Pocket. This comes as great news for tech enthusiasts, as it adds another option in the FPGA-based market.

Key Information:

  • Device: Palmer Luckey's Chromatic
  • Release Date: Holiday season
  • Price: $199 per unit
  • Technology Used: Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for hardware emulation, offering more accurate game play compared to traditional software emulators

Distinct Features:

  1. Design Focus: The Chromatic is tailored specifically to showcase Game Boy games as they were originally released.
  2. Display Technology:
    • Maintains Nintendo's original 160x144 resolution on a screen designed to ensure faithful visual representation of Game Boy games.

Comparison with Analogue Pocket:

  • Limited Support: Unlike the Analogue Pocket, which supports multiple platforms and offers enhanced functionality, the Chromatic is geared more towards providing an authentic Game Boy gaming experience.
  • Display Difference: While the Analogue Pocket features a high-resolution 1600 x 1440 LCD screen for better detail, the Chromatic maintains the original resolution to deliver a classic visual experience.

Additional Touches:

  • Hardware - Magnesium alloy shell, PBT buttons, compatibility with original Game Boy link cables.
  • Power Supply - Uses three AA batteries or supports a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack through USB-C, which also supports lag-free video output.

As the competition heats up between FPGA-based retro handhelds, what do you think is most important in designing such devices? Is it accuracy, convenience, or nostalgia that holds the key to attracting gamers?

I finally blew the dust off of my copy of Bravely Default for the 3ds.. I'm only a few hours in but this might be the most beautiful jrpg I've played on this console. The story so far seems somewhat stereotypical, but the art is gorgeous and the gameplay has been amazing so far! Just wanted to share!

The iconic run-and-gun shooter, Contra, is now reimagined in a third-person perspective with the release of Contra Reforged by homebrew developer Retrolead. This modern take on the classic game retains its retro graphics and difficulty level while offering unique features such as an auto lock-on mechanism that eliminates the need for precise aiming.

Key Features:

  • Retro Graphics: The look and sound of the NES port are preserved, giving players a nostalgic experience.
  • 3D Third-Person Shooter: The gameplay is transformed into a more complex third-person perspective, offering new ways to navigate levels and engage in combat.
  • Auto Lock-On Mechanism: Players can simply jump and shoot without needing to aim much, thanks to the game's advanced targeting system.

Would you prefer playing classic 2D run-and-gun games or would you enjoy the unique twist of a third-person perspective?

I hope this isn't perceived as advertising.. I'm quite apprehensive about making this purchase and will absolutely update with my progress if/when the console arrives.

In the meantime, if anyone out there has any experience buying through AliExpress I would love to hear from you. This is my first purchase and I feel like it's a total gamble.

If this is somehow perceived as advertising, mods please delete immediately. I do not want to violate any rules. This community is too awesome to lose!

More and more indie developers are turning to retro games for inspiration. That's never been more apparent than during this latest Steam Next Fest. I played over 20 retro-styled demos and found 9 of the best.

This modernized version pays homage to its classic roots while incorporating new elements for an exciting remake. I found a box of CD-Roms and floppy disks in my mum's basement and damnit, I want to play them! I could use emulators, DosBox or VMs but it's never quite the same as having the real thing, so between an eBay mobo and a box of old parts I managed to build my new gaming rig to cover 1990-2005.

Its running a P3 at 1GHz, 512MB of ram, and an ATI Xpert98 with 8MB of memory. As I didn't want to run an old IDE drive with a million hours on it, I tried an SATA-IDE adapter, it caused some issues during the install but that just felt like the standard Windows experience.

Though unpopular, I went with ME for 2 reasons, the first was Dos support, the second is that I went from W95 to ME as a kid, 98 wouldn't have felt the same. The install bricked twice with video drivers but I finally got it up and running with the default drivers and an 18" Samsung flat CRT (runs up to 1600x1200 at a nauseating 60hz).

So what were your favorite games from the 90's and early 2000s?

Fans of the Mega Man series were excited about the announcement of Mega Man Mania for the GBA in 2004, as it offered a modern-day collection of the classic Game Boy Mega Man games. Unfortunately, the project was canceled shortly after. However, fans are now reviving this idea and working on remastering and coloring the original five Game Boy Mega Man games to create a compilation for the GBA.

The focus is on bringing new life to these classic games for fans to enjoy once again. This fan project aims to colorize and remaster the five Mega Man titles on Game Boy, with plans to eventually create a compilation for the GBA. This collection could be a dream come true for many retro gaming enthusiasts.

Some of us find ourselves drawn to the unique charm of retro hardware. One new creation that captures this sentiment is Game.Work by Abe Haskins - an innovative piece of art inspired by the vintage aesthetic.

Abe Haskins has meticulously crafted a retro gaming console that harkens back to the days of yore when plastic hardware and chunky cartridges were the norms. The Game.Work system, built around a Framework mainboard, showcases a custom case inspired by the TurboGrafx-16 while still integrating modern functionality.

The console also features cartridges that serve as storage media for games, with labels flaunting game artwork to replicate the retro experience. These cartridges are connected through a custom slot on top of the machine.

The console's case is primarily 3D-printed but boasts additional hardware like an acrylic board for the motherboard attachment, a metal back plate for stability, and rubber feet to keep it stationary during gameplay. The entire project has been made open source by Haskins, allowing enthusiasts worldwide to recreate or further develop their versions of this nostalgic gaming system.

The Game.Work console integrates the Framework mainboard, from a modular laptop specialist with easy upgradeability.

For those eager to dive deeper into this unique project and witness it come to life, Haskins has shared an official project video on YouTube. Follow him for more updates.

It's a testament that sometimes, you really can’t escape the plastic nostalgia!

Hey folks, I've lurked on this community for a while now but haven't really posted anything until today. Sorry if this isn't really the right place to ask questions like this, but since this is a place for old games, I felt it'd be the most appropriate one...

I've been wanting to re-live some of the games I used to play as a child, and I remember how, back in 2004-2006, there was this Spider-Man game I used to play as a kid but could never beat. Lately I've been curious if I could finally do it now.

All I remember about it were three missions:

  • The first mission was some sort of "tutorial", where you'd have to use the web ability to swing across buildings and pass through a certain amount of these glowing green spider icons to clear the level.
  • The second(?) mission was about some robbers/thieves stealing a bank's armoured car and you had to capture all of them.
  • The third(?) mission was some sort of boss fight against a powerful guy who was apparently helping the thieves. I never got past this fight, he would always grab me - when he grabbed Spider-Man, I couldn't really do anything, he's just keep holding him and grunting occasionally; there might've been a key combination to break free from his grasp, but I didn't know at the time and always assumed it was game over and that I had to restart.

I understand this is really vague, but my memories of this game are incredibly vague and I barely recall much more. I remember I played it on a computer at least. I couldn't find anything like it on Wikipedia's pages on Spider-Man games, so I'm wondering if it might've been an unofficial game or something like that?

Lv4 Games, a team of dedicated Castlevania fans, has created a fan-made game called Castlevania ReVamped that aims to bring together the nostalgic aesthetics of the NES-era Castlevania games with the modern, non-linear gameplay of Metroidvanias. This blend of classic and contemporary elements results in an impressive mix that stands up to Konami's own work in the genre.

The Linux version is compatible with Steam Deck, and you can find the download links in the article. If you're interested in experiencing this unique take on Castlevania, be sure to check it out!

So...after watching latest Noclip video, I was having a bit of a Wipeout itch...I have a rather decent gaming computer, but I was wondering what would be the best way to play the wipeout series...was 2097 the best one? Is there a good way to get it running at decent resolution/effects these days?

Thanks!

Retro games are often known for being more difficult than their modern brethren. Every now and then though you run into a game that is actually too easy. Which game would you prefer to have more of a challenge?

Great little game with a fun, unique mechanic. I'm surprised I've never heard anyone talk about it. Its a bit too easy, but it looks like a fun game to speedrun which makes up for that. I'm going to try to get all the collectibles to unlock the bonus leves and the pool minigame.

Here's some gameplay if you want to check it out

We were having a chat about retro box art on my Discord server, so I was browsing some Famicom box art today. I don't have a ton of NES (North America) ones I like, as it's a lot of this kind of thing, but there are a bunch of Japan ones I like. The post link is for Destiny of an Emperor 「天地を喰らう」. I also like the original Zelda box art, very satisfying shade of green:

What are some NES/Famicom boxes you like?
