They are pointing out that it's a dirty job but someone's got to do it. If you had a public that treated animals with respect they wouldn't be needed.

I was always in two minds of the TV series, good characters but a poor interpretation.

Agreed, I liked the girls roles they had a spark between them and good characters, but it doesn't stop the fact people would call the film problematic if it was a woman on Chris's role. It did have glaring sexist issues.
