Life is just a bleak pile of shit sometimes. But there are wonderful parts too. Reach out to one person you know and talk to them. The rules of statistics say that way more people appreciate you than you think. If you dont immediately know who to call, check https://findahelpline.com

I hope you get better soon.

I‘m way ahead of you. Using three forgejo instances and patiently waiting for federation. I love forgejo.

I use ionos since 10 years and I‘m very happy, but only for webhosting stuff. The VPS Services I get from Hetzner and I havent really tested them.

I did have a meeting with IONOS this week though about it and I‘m positive about the UI for new vps owners since its quite easy to grasp but I dont think they’re a better option than hetzner.

I agree. But I would go further and say if other industries didnt have more complex schemes and locked down IP (eg car manufacturing), people would def build their own shit with current tools. Its always the greed of those not willing to invest in innovation that keeps progress away. Media piracy and FOSS culture are the only real challengers to greed imo.

I‘m currently trying to bring up a rather complicated setup using garage. Garage on Homeserver behind firewall, vpn relay, peertube and other s3 compatible services on a vps. Garage works rather weill, the vpn is giving me a hard time though. Can recommend.

Peertube is essentially mastodon or lemmy with videos. Its trivial to set up compared to the other two. I run a private instance so I cant talk about the rate of issues but from an experienced admin perspective, its no more of a problem to set up and run than the others.

But I too think that long term it would be great to have more user friendly setups as to enable less experienced folks to host it.

Having as much on one machine as possible has efficiency and maintenance benefits since you have less machines to configure. The drawback is that multiple services can add up peak demands and run the machine oom which you can either solve by leaving extra headroom or make them redundant imo.

Someone with more experience than me might have other ideas to add.

As someone with diagnosed mental health issues, I can tell you that I mean no harm. But sadly, the pure difference in perception paired with unfamiliarity of the two parties makes the situation insanely dangerous, not the person.

You never know why the person is in this predicament and if they have a tendency towards violence, robbery or other things. I‘m not saying they are. I‘m saying you have to assume they are before making that decision. Can you defend yourself against a pulled knife or even gun, do you have enough mental capacity to observe them at all times. Those odds do not look good.

So, although I would never willingly look down on folks less fortunate than myself. I too will never ever let a stranger into my house if they raise any concerns.

Dont buy stuff from amazon. Its like „have you seen that guy lucifer? He sells the greatest stuff for cheap!“ what could go wrong…

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

It makes no sense to switch from either to the other imo. It would make sense to switch to mobile linux for those who are tech savvy and once it is more polished, the others.

Also brainwashing. People get their ideas from other people. Some through books, some through those they call experts but we‘re very easily influenced. Getting blasted with biased shows and commercials that show us how „fair“ law enforcement is makes people easy targets for pushing dangerous laws.

Hi folks, I have recently changed my daily driver to ubuntu desktop and I use thunderbird quite a lot. Works good for me. I've seen that it has a matrix client (which doesnt work that great for me yet). Do you think it will get a lemmy/masto client as well? Would make sense imo. Have a good one.

Recently I read through the comments on a post and someone suggested OP should „just read the room“.

I have been told this since I was young and it triggers me every time.

Being unaware of social dynamics in a situation is a thing a lot of autistic people I know struggle with. „Reading the room“ in my understanding means „becoming aware of the unspoken things in a situation“.

Collins dictionary says: If you say that someone reads the room, you mean that they understand their audience and adapt what they say to suit it.

I think, although not on purpose, saying this is massively ableist and making fun of someone for „not reading the room“ is harassment imo.

Feel free to give an opposing opinion as well. I would like to hear them.

Edit: I solved this using the command gsettings reset org.gnome.Settings last-panel

And it turns out I have the exact problem of this user: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/2017498 I just didnt know because everything in gnome control center didnt work. After resetting, I deliberately clicked on the mouse settings and it went bad again. Reset again and it works again.

Old Description (out of date, just for reference):

Hi! I'm trying to find out why my display settings are not showing when rightclicking or using gnome-control-center display.

I have recently disabled a mod I had done to disable pipewire since I couldn't hear anything when using rdp. But probably some of the changed configuration is now breaking parts of my system.

Here's the error message when using the above command:

GStreamer-Play[16682]: ERROR: GtkGstPlay: 'playbin' element not found, please check your setup
^CTrace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)

I tried the following:

  • uninstalling gstreamer (bad idea)
  • reinstalling gstreamer using apt-get install libgstreamer1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-dev gstreamer1.0-plugins-base gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly gstreamer1.0-libav gstreamer1.0-tools gstreamer1.0-x gstreamer1.0-alsa gstreamer1.0-gl gstreamer1.0-gtk3 gstreamer1.0-qt5 gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio
  • reinstalling ubuntu desktop

I'm pretty much out of ideas as when I google the problem I only get obscure problems on github which don't seem to resemble the problem I have.

Can anyone tell me what may be wrong? I will gladly provide logs if you need them.

Thank you very much for reading. Have a good one.

Hi folks!

I have a sonos system from my pre self hosting days and it’s much too expensive to exchange for something else atm.

Since today, I can’t use my music subscriptions anymore and I don’t have any music stored locally. Reason is a giant service outage at sonos.

I know, it’s the classic argument for cutting the cord. My question now is, how would you do it? Just pirate music since I have a subscription and am entitled to listen to music?

Btw. the issue is with sonos cloud services so the music services are available everywhere but in sonos. If I had a way to stream music from apple or amazon in my homenetwork, sonos should be able to pick it up.

Also, what do people do with sonos products? Do they get jailbroken/rooted or is that not a thing?

Thanks for reading. Have a good one.

Edit: As of five minutes ago, I am aware that there is no official ui for the elgato stream deck which is a huge disservice to the users of this expensive piece of hardware. I was under the impression that streamdeck-ui was the official (and very outdated) official version, which is false. Those who bothered to explain this, thank you very much. To those piling up on someone who just hasn't as much knowledge as you do: feels bad man. Maybe consider that this is not reddit and schooling someone does not have to be aggressive.

Hi folks!

I have switched to my Linux daily driver this week and after some starting issues, it's working quite well.

But a few bits and bobs are quite annoying, such as streamdeck ui. The windows version looks and feels like a spaceship compared to the barebones version I have on ubuntu 23.04

Here's what the windows version looks like.

Additionally, the windows version has plugins and stuff that pretty much make giant scripts that can do pretty much anything and everything. The Linux version doesn't even have it's own pictures that come with it.

If you're curious I just used apt install streamdeck-ui instead of the complex stuff that is on the web (and doesn't work anymore because outdated).

Am I just using a really outdated version or is the linux version just trash?

TL;DR: Linux version of streamdeck ui looks 20 yrs old while the windows version looks like photoshop.

Thanks for reading. Have a good one!

Hi folks!

I got my daily driver to work (which wasn't as hard as I thought) but linphone (VoIP solution) gives me a little bit of headache.

When I try clicking on a phone number in firefox (tel:) it asks for the app, I provided the linphone path but it doesn't do anything.

Now, I went digging. Turns out they have a gitlab instance with my exact issue unsolved for 2 yrs (but they're still active). I tried logging in with my gitlab credentials but it doesn't work. is that because it's self hosted? How should someone provide issues or other feedback if nobody can log in?

The Issue on gitlab: https://gitlab.linphone.org/BC/public/linphone-desktop/-/issues/27

Otherwise the app works great. was even easier to get working than micro sip on windows.

Thanks for reading! Have a good one.

Btw.: I know this is an app specific issue but we don't have a gitlab community yet, feel free to make one. :)

hi folks!

Update: I got pipewire working now. This is what helped me:

sudo apt install pipewire-audio-client-libraries libspa-0.2-bluetooth libspa-0.2-jack
systemctl --user mask pulseaudio
systemctl --user --now enable pipewire{,-pulse}.{socket,service}

Now it is an audacity issue. Will make another thread for that.

The System

Processor 10920x, 32GB Ram, 3060ti, zoom u-22 DAC, Stream Deck, Logitech camera

The OS

Ubuntu 23.04 upgraded from 22.10 (yesterday)

TL;DR

I reactivated pulseaudio, disabling pipewire, now trying to revert without having to reinstall from scratch.

The Situation

I am currently working on my first linux daily driver. Hardware arrived yesterday. The pc has been in use for couple months but not as daily since the gpu was only a stand in.

It was running quite a rough config, ubuntu 22.10 with a pulse audio mod (disabled pipewire so I could hear sound when RDPing in).

I now reverted those changes with a guide (because my microphone would not be picked up by audacity) but it promptly destroyed my Desktop gui. I reinstalled ubuntu-desktop and the gui works again now.

But after disabling pulse and reenabling pipewire, I don't get any sound output at all. pipewire status gives me the following output:

● pipewire.service - PipeWire Multimedia Service
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/user/pipewire.service; enabled; preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Tue 2023-09-19 10:17:16 CEST; 5min ago
TriggeredBy: ● pipewire.socket
   Main PID: 3211 (pipewire)
      Tasks: 2 (limit: 38029)
     Memory: 4.1M
        CPU: 122ms
     CGroup: /user.slice/user-1000.slice/[email protected]/session.slice/pipewire.service
             └─3211 /usr/bin/pipewire

Sep 19 10:17:16 systemd[3204]: Started pipewire.service - PipeWire Multimedia Service.
Sep 19 10:17:16 pipewire[3211]: mod.rt: Can't find org.freedesktop.portal.Desktop. Is xdg-desktop-portal running?
Sep 19 10:17:16 pipewire[3211]: mod.rt: found session bus but no portal

Update

I have tried to re/install pipewire, xdg-desktop-portal, xdg-desktop-portal-gnome, all without change.

Important: I'm using x11, not wayland as nvidia drivers don't seem to support wayland.

Thank you for reading. Have a good one! :)

Update: I installed CS:GO and it runs insanely smooth. Metro didnt start at all. I now have cycled through many compatibility options and tried proton experimental, latest and now linux runtime. Now it works on solid 60 fps!

Hi folks! I made it! I built a daily driver with Linux!

But I'm running into the first walls, which was expected but is still annoying.

So I bought a 3060ti which I got for a reasonable price and tried playing metro last light redux. Sub 10 fps. I'm pretty baffled atm. Have checked (and for sure, reddit was the first answer) but so far no dice. I changed from open source to proprietary driver, no changes either.

Is there a troubleshooting guide or something? Can I even guarantee my card runs on full capacity without windows? (sorry, I'm not used to linux desktop).

Thanks for reading! Have a good one!

I just found a handful of bots that are spamming lemmy and kbin communities for hours but this place here does not seem to do anything against it.

The only posts in the last 18 hrs seem to be bot posts.

Maybe I‘ll mod my ps3 to make it emulate games. I heard that works pretty good.

I obviously would like to get tons of old games and since they’re not sold anywhere for a fair price, I deem it morally sound to find them.

I heard of „handheld retro gaming consoles“ which also have found games on them. Does anyone have experience with those?

Btw: Since the graphics are pretty low res, that could be a better alternative than the ps3 since the 55“ tv its hooked up to might make it look worse.

It’s just an idea at this point so I‘m happy for any direction. I figured c/retrogaming might be wrong since talking about finding unlicensed games might be against their rules. Feel free to advise me otherwise.

P.S.: Forgive the ignorance. I know my way around commandline and some medium advanced programming but I‘m not pro at sailing the high seas at all.

Hi folks! I moderate a community but the app I use while on the go (memmy) does not seem to have any mod tools. I can’t find a way to delete posts on the community I mod. Maybe its my mistake.

Does anyone know of a solution for this? Except maybe using the web interface I assume.

Thanks in advance.

I read the article but I didn’t check out the platform yet. Thought it might be useful for my fellow autistic people.
