Of course they started with an existing platform to save time and money. When anyone else does it, it’s a smart way to save time and money. When anyone related to captain cheese ball does it, it’s because he’s cheap as shit. I wonder if the devs ever got paid.

They literally violated the AGPL license of Mastodon and thought they'd get away with it.
Literally the only reason why we know it's based on Mastodon is because of some smart redditor forcing a page crash exposing the Mastodon error message warranting further investigation.
It wasn't until they got called out and got a formal notification of the breach in terms that it got fixed; because if they didn't with the 30days allotted time they would've been sued.

So they have a public repository now? I'd like to see that

[–] Bitrot@lemmy.sdf.org 14 points 2 years ago (2 children)
[–] Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 2 years ago

Honestly it is hilarious to me that they rather make a zip file then a repo.

[–] QuazarOmega@lemy.lol 7 points 2 years ago

Ah yes, git as cloud storage, or GaCS for the business people.

Actually, there isn't even a repository stored in the zip because ✨ transparency ✨

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 16 points 2 years ago

Backstory that I hadn't known. Doesn't surprise me one bit. Cheers to whoever proved the theft.

[–] KIM_JONG@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago

Lol the posts are called Truths. Someone should start Fake Social where the posts are called Fakes. And you can Refake others Fakes.

[–] HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml 14 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

They actually tried to hide that fact and even removed references to Mastodon in the UI until SF Conversancy threatened to sue them and permanently cut their license to it.

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 14 points 2 years ago

Yeah, the main reason I remember is they almost got sued over not disclosing it I think

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 77 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The truthier something claims to be, the less it is.

When I was out for a walk the other month, I saw a newspaper in a waterproof bag, propped up at the side of the path by a hedge. It was called The Light, and boldly claimed to be "the uncensored truth". Would you believe it, it turned out to be full of Covid conspiracy nonsense and anti-semitism.

In my day we just found discarded grotty porn in hedges, now it's right wing nutbaggery. I fear for our youth. We need to distribute more copies of Reader's Wives and Razzle across the flora and fauna of Britain.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

They took the centerfolds out of Playboy, then stopped printing it altogether and look where it’s got us. Soggy forest porn was a rite of passage for many young froods, along with the VHS tapes with an innocuous label like a Disney cartoon affixed atop. Here in the states we have the Mormons and JWs passing around their rags, extolling various exclusionary ideologies and the same anti vax stuff while their congregations are all getting infected en masse. Fucking madness, I want to try another planet 👍

[–] rmuk@feddit.uk 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You don't live near Mansfield do you? I used to see that all the time around there (I moved away recently) and I made a point of picking them up and throwing them away.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 7 points 2 years ago

I'm down the M1 a bit in sunny Long Eaton.

I suspect one of the canal boat people left it. Most of them seem normal enough, but you do have the odd ones with golliwogs in their boat windows, or alt-righty looking flags flying.

5 minutes ago I searched the app store for the word "Arby's". First result? The Hardee's app. SEO is a cancer.

[–] Fades@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

It’s almost entirely just pay to play these days

[–] cynetri@midwest.social 37 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Truth Social is built with Mastodon fun fact lmao

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 21 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Yep, and I'm pretty sure they almost got sued over not disclosing it too

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 8 points 2 years ago (4 children)

If it's based in Mastodon then it's he wrong to say it's the exact opposite of Mastodon, no?

That's like saying a Lemmy app is the opposite of another Lemmy app, if one app defaulted to Lemmygrad and the other to Exploding Heads.

[–] Decoy321@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

They meant in other contexts. As in, the latter is a decent platform full of ways to find educated, diverse commentary. The former is an echo chamber filled with rancid, hate-filled bullshit.

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 4 points 2 years ago

Well, more of the antithesis since the kind/stance of the content

[–] KIM_JONG@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

But there’s a difference between branding and backend implementation.

If I search for Lemmy.world and I get back hexbear, are you going to say that’s the right result since they are both Lemmy?

[–] pjhenry1216@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

It's essentially forked mastodon. There's no federation with it. It's just using the core functionality. Plus Mastodon's development had a goal and vision. TruthSocial is somewhat antithetical to it.

[–] cynetri@midwest.social 4 points 2 years ago

Yup, they didn't comply with the license Mastodon uses (Affero General Public License) by not publishing the source code and making it accessible via something like a button and they got a legal notice to either add one or get sued

[–] Pofski@sopuli.xyz 34 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Is it weird that I find the "Teen" category the most disturbing?

[–] gizmonicus@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 years ago

No, I found that disturbing too. What rating do you give something that's not fit for consumption at any age? NSFL?

[–] CaptainAlcohol@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago (3 children)

This is a sponsored app, if you notice it's an add. They likely paid to get there. The actual search result is below the add

[–] hydroel@lemmy.world 24 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It is an ad, and also a really shitty practice to display it exactly like it was the first result of your research.

[–] Cleverdawny@lemm.ee 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I dunno, it says right there "ads related to your search"

[–] hydroel@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago (2 children)

It was designed to blend in with the search results. It's the same shitty design as the sponsored results appearing like they were the first few results of your Google or Bing search, or ads appearing as unread emails in Gmail or Hotmail.

[–] Cleverdawny@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah, I get it, I am just saying that companies have been doing that for a long time now, and we gotta just be computer literate enough to discern the difference. It's shitty, I agree

The most surprising thing is that TS actually have enough money to pay for google ads.

[–] CaptainAlcohol@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Not really, his supporters are dumping so much money for his legal defences, he's got 3 PAC, of which he's using 2. On top of that it appears that he's OK with investing his own money if that weren't enough. And he's got billions of private funds...

[–] yata@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago

Sure, but the company behind TS is in big financial troubles. The raised money definitely doesn't go into TS itself.

[–] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Yeah, but ads are supposed to be enticing; that was supposed to be part of the joke but apparently neither worked haha

[–] KIM_JONG@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

Did you mean Master Don?

[–] BustinJiber@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Truthsocial is higher rated than Reddit app? Interesting...
