We seem to be getting attacked. Different accounts from different instances are posting to random places on various instances in short succession.

Mods everywhere be careful I guess? Did they obtain mod or admin permissions or any secret data or is this just another case of spammers?

From the screenshot I can read:

Hello! I'm Itoh Akihisa from criminal group "Black Cat Server". Our organization from day-to-day contributes to society...

It's just bots or spammers generating accounts on various instances (<- edited for clarity and correction) then using them to spam popular communities. Happens pretty regularly, but unfortunately if the home instance doesn't ban the user then each instance has to remove the spam themselves.

Also, there's no way to report a user to their home instance so long as they don't post anything in a community on their home instance. So the only people who can ban them in a way that federates to other servers also doesn't know unless someone sends them a personal message. And they are using a bunch of different instances to make it hard to do that.

This has been fixed in 0.19 thankfully. But for instances running older versions, what you said is still true.

I'm on 0.19.3 and can't find the user report button!

Or do you mean reports on content now go to the user's home instance as well?

Yes, exactly.

Its from the microblog side but leaking into lemmy a bit since they mass tag everything they find (which includes lemmy communities)

Oh sorry, you're right, this wave does appear to be mostly Mastodon accounts.

Here's what translator said:

Hello! My name is Akihisa Ito, aka ap12, and I am the operator of the criminal organization "Black Cat Server@ap12!! The criminal organization "Black Cat Server" to which I belong contributes to society every day! We operate VOICEVOX text-to-speech bot and VOICEROID text-to-speech bot, collect messages collected via bots and personal information of members, and sell them to hackers!

I suppose they're trying to sow fear or something? Like "your data isnt safe" which is bs.

Japanese Misskey/Mastodon servers have also been spammed by the exact same thing since about 15 hours ago, and it's still going. I guess they're targeting Lemmy as well now, damn...

pretty sure someone doesnt enjoy the fediverse not being under their control. they can get fucked. :)

masto admin here. my instances are also getting hammered from external traffic.

The annoying thing is, I don't think that masto has any good tools to check which instances are causing the traffic. Especially as it's getting rerouted through a relay in my case

I am seeing increase in pict-rs ram consumption although I'm basically alone in my instance. Any ideas what the reason could be? (edit: since around the same time I saw this stuff happening)

Nothing says "badass hacker" quite like insecurely cyberattacking a community-based platform.

translation using google's gemini A.I:

"Hello! This is ap12, the operator of the criminal organization "Black Cat Server", also known as Ito Akahisa (@ap12)! The criminal organization "Black Cat Server" I belong to contributes to society every day..."
