Because of the naming model I once got the email [email protected]. it was hilarious until we realized anytime I was attached to a group email, the spam filters would remove it.

[–] [email protected] 58 points 9 months ago (1 children)

When will science finally unlock a spam filter with a sense of humor?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago

This kind of shit is only going to get worse the more we rely on AI.

[–] [email protected] 44 points 9 months ago (1 children)

So you couldn’t be emailed, seems like a win to me! The only thing worse than corporate emails are teleconferences.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago

Imagine how many meeting you'd have to sit through though.

"Oh damn.. I missed that business meeting, oh so sad..the filter strikes again"

"Oh you wanted it yesterday... Oh sorry it seems I didn't get it...the filter strike again"

My wife got the email [email protected]. She was not happy.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 9 months ago

So you chose the next best username...

[–] [email protected] 87 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Hahaha that's an awesome email. She should totally just roll with it. When saying out the email to people just deadpan the delivery for maximum effect.

"I'm sorry, finger you where?"

[–] [email protected] 26 points 9 months ago

At uwu.uwu I mean fuck

[–] [email protected] 33 points 9 months ago

And add an awkward pause before you continue with the @

[–] [email protected] 20 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (2 children)

Spelling it out is worse because it sounds like you're trying to be subtle so the people around don't hear

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago

Whisper ASMR voice for max effect

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago (2 children)

About the best you could do would be too make weird group's of letters when spelling it out. Like, "My email is FING... ERME" or something like that.

Reminds me of that rumored writing utensil website... Pen island, was it? XD

[–] [email protected] 48 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Joining the ranks of awesome email addresses.

Redacted, real examples from my colleagues past:

Interestingly that's probably enough to dox myself.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago

Yeah, now we all know that you worked at the well-known company example.com

Does nobody file their fingernails anymore? God damned barbarians, the lot of you.

Particularly bad since there are more flexible ways of creating usernames that can prevent collisions or unfortunate combinations.

In particular, firstname.lastname, with the addition of middle name first-letters if they exist. Sure, you can still get name collisions, but this method gives you a level of flexibility and professionalism that OP’s does not.

You can even partition people by function or position by using subdomains. So in this case, it could have been [email protected] such that they never are confused for anything other than a student.

Or maybe by campus. Or a combination of @position.campus.city.institution.edu, especially if we are looking at an institution with tens of thousands of students in multiple locations across multiple cities.

Or she can just call tech services and they will give her an alias of her choice. Happens all the time.

Maybe not even the first time it's happened to this person.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

At our university, we give students a list of 6 possible usernames based on what's available and which algorithm used to generate the name. Work pretty well, and sometimes people get really cool ones. They can change their username between their choices at will, again based on availability.

I'm thinking that this might have happened, and still ended up an unfortunate event "[email protected]"

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

Can we just give everyone a fucking serial number and get it over with?

[–] [email protected] 25 points 9 months ago

An acquaintance of mine was cursed with [email protected] because his first and middle initials were B.E.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 9 months ago

I blame the parents.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This reminds me of the story I read once about Baseball Reference's old link naming structure.

It was similar to this scheme, but it took the first five letters of the last name, and the first two of the first name. There were variants and workarounds for players with the same letters in their name, and such.

But then there was the result for Jewish player Kevin Youkilis...

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Youkike ? I Don't get it...

[–] [email protected] 23 points 9 months ago (1 children)

"Kike" is a slur for Jewish people. Maybe a little dated by now.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Guess that means I’m dated too

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Nah, just didn’t grow up somewhere like Florida. Most of us can’t name the Presidents, but holy shit there’s a depth to the slurs you’d hear thrown around.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago

Grew up in California, had friends who said it regularly

Emphasis on had, there. I was a teen and they had the drugs and booze, ya make do

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago

I think the last time I heard it was in American History X. Don’t think I ever heard anyone say it in person.

Heard of a swedish example. User “Rune Karlsson” got the email [email protected] which equates to [email protected] 🤷🏼

[–] [email protected] 15 points 9 months ago

And today's freshman orientation lesson, why you shouldn't dox yourself.

Quite amusing really.

One of my account managers was called S****** Hart and her email was shart@ which amused me so much.
