So not to be nitpicky but I saw some WRC content posted. Is this sub not just racing but motorsports in general? Should it be c/motorsports?

Rally is auto racing. If you objection is dirt, Americans have dirt track racing, Rally has all tarmac sometimes. Or was their another point?
Dirt? It has nothing to do with the surface, I thought the definition of racing was setting X competitors off at the same time and having them directly race each other to see who finishes first. That's not how rallying works.
Rally is a great motorsport though.
It is racing against time not opponent position, except when they do RallyCross and start two simultaneously. Auto racing just describes that it is cars. Decades back I always heard it called Rally Racing, rather than Circuit Racing or Drag Racing. I think we have must have dropped Racing off of Rally and Circuit off of Circuit. But Rally describes that it is timed stages rather than a circuit.
Wait, rallie isn't racing?
What is your definition of racing? Is it simply anything that determines who is faster at something, or does it need to involve directly racing each other, being simultaneously on track and defending and overtaking to see who finishes first? That's what I thought racing was, and rally isn't that.
I see your point, especially considering there's speed rally and regularity rally (which isn't competing on who gets to the checkpoint faster, but closer to the right time). I'd still call rally racing though. That is, I don't see value in splitting it into it's own category. There's formula racing, stock racing, drag racing, rally racing... They're all racing. They're all different, yet all similar in higher or lower degrees.
Yeah that's kind of where my head was at, but considering the downvotes I guess I was way off base.
I would say the former. Your latter definition also excludes autocross
I always thought a race was setting off together and seeing who finishes first. I always saw it as one of those square/rectangle things: all races are tests of speed, but not all tests of speed are races. Can't remember if I was taught it specifically or just picked it up from somewhere.
Regardless, it's not meant to exclude anything, it's not a value judgement or a way to look down on anything. It's just easier to know what you're talking about with precise definitions.
Doesn't really matter anyway as the autoracing community isn't big enough to splinter into smaller communities.
I wouldnβt consider something being excluded as a negative, just more like a venn diagram thing. I think anything where youβre are competing on time is a race so that would include rally, time trials or autocross. Drifting, demolition derby, stunting etc would be motorsports but not racing.
It's meant to be very generalized and I didn't think c/motorsports was as fitting when I started it. Sometimes I like to watch sim racing and that's pixels on a screen so the motorsport part didn't feel like it would cover everything either. At some point I'll probably start posting motorcycle events that I find interesting too. As long as what's being posted is generally related to competitive driving of some kind, it's fine.
Lemmy has a few communities for individual series already and a lot of them are fairly lean on content. I liked the idea of a more generic space to get some fans together to hopefully get things flowing.
