It was the fourth time he has been arrested since Trump freed him.

Way to go.

Fox news would be talking about this for months if not an entire presidential term.

Decades. The frequency might decrease after the president they blamed was out of office, but they'd attach it to the Democratic party and haul it out and dust it off periodically to blame the Democratic party.

He got put in jail initially because of dealing weed, feel like that's a fine reason to commute a sentence.

I truly have to wonder if he's always been a piece of shit or if jail made him worse.

Everyone I know who has done time came out the other end a worse person.

Braun’s previous run-ins with authorities included the drug dealing conviction as well as a civil case filed by the Federal Trade Commission that resulted in a $20 million judgment against him in 2024 after a jury trial. The FTC said Braun ran a loan company that illegally withdrew money from customers’ accounts and sometimes threatened physical violence to get them to pay.

Knew I'd find a financial crime of some sort. This is the kind of guy Trump likes.

Judges and president need to take responsibility. Need to provide guarantees to the public that he won't re-offend. Presidents should be required to put up huge sums of his own money for every clemency given.

If the pardon exists to correct errors in the justice system, then the president should provide guarantees to the public that he won't re-offend, especially not the same type of crimes. It is not too much of a ask. President needs to take responsibility and be responsible, this is not a game or a TV show.

President'a own money? What, so they can just pay for their freedom? No, bail is an outdated concept.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

It is probably not the best solution but... currently you can still pay president for freedom (without president putting up bail money or being fined) who is going to compensate the future victim for the president negligence? Who is going to take responsibility? Maybe not bail/collateral money but a fine would be better and/or a loss of license of members of review board. So long as someone is accountable and taking responsibility for it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 12 hours ago

The solution I personally want is a randomly selected "jury" of reps to be on to approve any pardons the president wants. Or some sort of approval board similarly made of elected officials. That way it adds an extra barrier to the corruption.

For responsibility, well, corruption charges should be what come about.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think money is the solution. The pardon exists to correct errors in the justice system. It is inadequate and insufficient to solve all those errors on its own but it can be useful in certain contexts. I think we should be pardoning more people in a thoughtful way, not less.

Clearly the issue here has more to do with Trump being a piece of shit than it does with the existence of a system for granting clemency. You could make the argument that a review board or some other form of independent review would be a good thing to add to the process but you could also make the argument that the best solution is simply to not make a self-serving piece of shit the President.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

The issue is not trump it is about taking responsibility, if it is not money it has to be something else maybe time in prison? review board, like juries are just to diffuse the responsibility. If there is a review board involved then the every member of review board need to be held accountable with appropriate punishment if he reoffend for similar crime within a certain period of time.

President needs to take responsibility for clemency and be held responsible by law. How he goes about deciding on who to give clemency is up to him, he can use a review board or science or Ouija board but he needs to take the final responsibility and be answerable to future victims, at least for a certain period of time after release.

Basically he needs to stand under the bridge he design and built with cars passing over the bridge.

Ok, fine, but is making the president put up collateral going to achieve that outcome? It seems more likely to encourage bribing the president to give wealthy criminals a pardon while ignoring those who can't pay the toll.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

But even now you can still pay the president to pardon without the president putting up any collateral. There is zero risk for the president. At least with collateral the families hurt by the criminal in the future can be compensated by state using that collateral money.

Or another way without collateral would be the president/board get fined heavily to compensate the future victims. And board member lose their license. Just like an architect or doctor lose license for malpractice. Whatever the solution is, someone need to held responsible and take responsibility.
