ads instead of useful info

It rotates and after some minutes shows the departure times. But if you're in hurry you want the time immediately, not after a while

We should look at how to fix the "bad exposure is exposure too" approach to advertising. It makes everything worse for everyone.

And personally, i think the effect is vastly overestimated.

Edit: or maybe it fixes itself, since everyone is oversaturated with ads and ignores them at best.

Blanket advertising is this bubble. Has been for decades. It's nearly impossible to get reasonable campaign data from a billboard. But in the scheme of business it's relatively inexpensive so everyone just buys in.

If it's not targeted, The vast majority of people aren't going to waste their time on it.

why isn't this banned already?

This drives me wild in fast food restaurants. I'm already here, I'm going to give you money, so don't make it harder or more frustrating!

[–] [email protected] 16 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

It's genuinely jarring because some places don't organize it logically so you're scouring the board and it switched and you gotta figure where you were ... makes me wanna slap the person that came up with this idea.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 hours ago

It's gotta be intentional. You and me might walk into a restaurant and make our own decision on what to order, but there must be some sort of market research that shows random ads and rotating items to be effective against a non-zero part of the population.

It's like rotating digital menus at restaurants but now instead of holding up the line waiting for it I get to miss my flight

I think this kind of shit flies because people honestly assume anything their electronics does is technically necessary.

Remote WiFi anal plugs have entered the chat.

"Please purchase a premium subscription to skip sudden interruptions"

Edit: Well no, it would be "please give a credit card number for security purposes", and then a few years down the road it force-updates to the new version that sometimes edges you unless you press the "purchase lootbox" button on the mandatory app.

Also seen in Mexico - incredibly annoying if you are trying to see where the fuck to go

Edit: and the stupid ads are like a whole minute or two, so you need to stand there like an idiot waiting to see where to go while hating everything this represents

I think we severely underestimate how much better life would be if we changed away from this paradigm. There are alternatives.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 22 hours ago

It should be legal to just spray paint over information boards that, instead if actual information, show shit ads.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I prefer when I see BSODs on those.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 21 hours ago

I don't

That means that I'm going to be stranded for a while

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

this is an act of desperation by the digital ad markets. they have to innovate new types of ad to sell because more and more the only ads that actually work even a little bit are personal testimony and billboards, neither of which the digital ad markets actually sell. we are currently experiencing an economic collapse in the advertising space which is driving the ad markets to use their propaganda machines for less and less scrupulous purposes. ever wonder why there's so much right wing bullshit in your youtube ads now? because that shit didn't sell razors or soap or mattresses or whatever. but it CAN make people very scared and upset

[–] [email protected] 3 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Well, that's simply not true. Ads are very effective and it still holds true that businessses get an almost guaranteed return on investment in ads.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 22 hours ago

read the subprime attention crisis. ads markets have gotten extremely uneffective

[–] [email protected] 4 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Neither of you are giving proof so I choose to believe that ads work

Italy? Why are all of the signs in English?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 hours ago

International hub.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Airport, tourist hotspot. Makes sense

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I suppose it might make sense if they were all in Italian and English, but I don’t see any signs that are in Italian at all.

I just think that’s weird

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 21 hours ago

Oh, I missed that

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Pretty common

[–] [email protected] 11 points 22 hours ago

Because the Axis powers lost, duh.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 23 hours ago

A lot of people from other countries go there, and I assume majority of Italians understand basic English.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 22 hours ago

English is fancy.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 22 hours ago

I was just there recently; a lot of the signs all over were in english. It was very easy to get around and everyone was really accommodating.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago

Actually infuriating.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm guessing they are using logic how everyone already using internet for everything so why not squeeze more money. And I know how this logic is flawed

[–] [email protected] 2 points 18 hours ago

Somebody came up with the idea, implemented it, saw a jump in revenue, got a promotion or fat bonus, all to make our lives just a little crappier. Unfortunately, it's that simple.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What are they advertising for? Flight information on whatsapp or something?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 hours ago

yes, they say (weirdly only in italian and not in any other language) that the departure board can be accessed via their chatbot on whatsapp
