It separately announced another policy that will allow parents with children in grades one to three in elementary schools to trade off a bit of their salary for the option to clock out early.

That's something. Not quite there yet, but something.

Depends on what "a bit" is. If Japan is anything like the rest of the world, people can't afford to lose any pay, for any reason.

Not sure what your "rest of the world" looks like, but at least in my bubble lots of people would love to work less for less money to have more time.

Yes, work less, more time... the money part is the "gotcha!".

I'm in Canada and over 50% of the population are living paycheck to paycheck. Too many people aren't even taking their earned time off just so they can put in extra hours to afford a roof over their head.

To anyone outside of Canada, the majority of our population lives where a cheap roof is about $100,000. As is each of the 4 walls. Plus the floor too. (So like $600,000)

Or you could rent a bachelor's apartment for like $2000/month.

I worked at a place with every other week Fridays off. It was amazing. People could actually go to Dr appts. Actually made us much more productive.

I have been working 4/5 (fridays off) and it was amazing.

I'm quite sure I was at least as productive as any one on 5/5.

I had 12 weeks of paternity leave at my last job. The only rule was that, as secondary caregiver, I couldn’t take it all at once.

I spread out the last 8 weeks and took every other Friday off for several months. It was awesome, and if it reduced my productivity, the difference was imperceptible. I had to be a little more keyed in on Mondays, sure, but I always felt more than capable after a long weekend.

Good. Shit like this is how you stop CEOs from getting NYCed. Though Japan still has a long way to go towards work life balance.

Considering the big changes after Abe's death I'm surprised there weren't more copycats assassinating for other causes, including work hours/black companies.

Don't worry, there is still room for that.

I can attest to the improvement in my sex life after covid had us both WFH for at least 2 days/week. Less tired, time to fuck when the kids aren't home. Huge win.
