...it's National Redhead Day!

Today, we celebrate those with red hair, and if you are one of those people, now's your time to shine!

Every November 5, National Redhead Day (also known as Love Your Red Hair Day) is for those with red hair to celebrate their status as one of the rarest hair colors.

In 2011, sisters Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti wanted people to be proud of their red hair in response to Kick a Ginger Day. So they started a website, "How to Be a Redhead", which led to the creation of National Redhead Day, and it surged in popularity!

What makes redheads special is genetics, specifically the MC1R gene on the 16th chromosome. If both of your parents were born with this gene, you may be a redhead. However, you can still be born with red hair even if just one or neither of your parents have the gene. It's also possible to be a natural redhead even if you're black or Asian.

Throughout history, redheads were accused of being witches who "stole the fire of hell", and were burned at the stake during the Spanish Inquisition. Redheads were also viewed as unclean lepers. None of these rumors are true, but the anti-redhead sentiment still exists to this day. National Redhead Day gives redheads a chance to spread positivity and be proud of who they are.

Some activities you can celebrate during National Redhead Day:

  • Get a new hairstyle to show your support
  • Have a party with your fellow redheads
  • Watch movies and TV shows with redhead characters

Happy National Redhead Day, everyone!

spoilerHuh? Oh, yeah, there's also this thing going on in America. I think it was called "Erection Day" or something like that? I don't know.
