It really makes me realize how truly fucked the next 30 years are going to be (and beyond of course) that all of a sudden no one cares about climate goals and reducing wasteful energy use "because AI".
Do y'all not realize ocean food networks are likely about to collapse in the next 10 years and that global warming has been alarmingly increasingly accelerating in the last 5 years?
Sure nuclear power can be great, but that power needs to be used for actually useful power efficient tasks. AI is the least energy efficient solution for most problems it attempts to solve, by several orders of magnitude.
Moreover I think the philosophy of nuclear power advocates is usually something along the lines of "we don't need to be energy efficient if we have unlimited power!" which is an absurdly naive way to look at the climate crisis that arose out of that same kind of thinking.
In the first place this flavor of nuclear power advocacy ignores that the current system is violently opposed to that kind of shared abundance and wealth at an existential level and that the solutions needed to solve that can never come from a more advanced and powerful nuclear design.
Advocacy for renewable energy on the other hand generally understands this and doesn't pretend the solution is a seductive fantasy about limitless clean power fueling limitless growth where people in wealthy industrialized nations can all keep living the same lifestyle indefinitely.

Treated cooling water shouldn't pose any danger.
Now whether or not it does depends on the honesty of the people claiming it's treated. But it shouldn't.
It's what the people want, so that's what it's gonna be used for, as long as the energy is clean and renewable, what do you care what someone spends their power bill on?
Putting aside clean for now, what part of nuclear is renewable again?
Woops. I misspoke. Yeah, nuclear is not renewable, but it's a helluva lot better than fossil fuels, and I'm not advocating for nuclear instead of solar/wind/hydro, but if it makes sense to do alongside renewables then I don't see why not, especially as energy demands go up and whatever your opinion getting every single person to comply with not running their own models is not realistic and a kneecap to the technological development.
I'm sure the government of Japan weighed their options and there is a good reason to do nuclear power, especially considering their history.
Its 95% renewable. And all deaths from nuclear including the bombs and melted down reactors is equivilent to a couple weeks of deaths caused by coal pollution.
I believe there is some evidance the oil/coal companies pushed anti nuclear propaganda cos it is so effective it would have effected their bottom line.
That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works. That's like saying plastic is renewable because you can recycle part of it
Nuclear is a centralised, slow and expensive technology. If we had built it up 50 years ago, we wouldn't be so dependent on coal today, that much is true. But to get away from coal now, we need investment in renewables.
The energy companies who own the coal plants often are the same that own the nuclear plants. And they're afraid that the grid becomes less centralised. I don't buy that conspiracy about coal suppressing nuclear. Nuclear isn't an economically viable technology today (and might not ever be) without huge government subsidies in perpetuity.
Because obviously wind and solar won't work. Look at satellite photos of Tokyo. Every building could be covered by solar panels, but naw let's privatize more profit to the nuclear industry while socializing the risk when a meltdown happen. Google the average payout of a family that fled Fukushima. It's NOTHING
