Between 2012 and 2022, there were 21,000 reported cases, according to Brazil's Ministry of Health. This resulted in more than 4,000 deaths and, over the past decade, there have been more than 6,500 amputations - averaging two each day.

Maranhão, the poorest state in Brazil, was found to have the highest incidence rate globally at 6.1 per 100,000 men.

Symptoms of penile cancer often start with a sore on the penis that does not heal and a strong-smelling discharge. Some people get bleeding and colour changes of the penis, too.

When detected early, there is a high chance of recovery through treatments such as the surgical removal of the lesion, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

But if left untreated, partial or total amputation of the penis, and possibly other nearby genital organs such as the testicles, may become necessary.

We’ll fuck that’s terrifying.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

We’ll fuck

Hopefully that doesn't give you penis cancer

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago

🤦 autocorrect got me again. Consent first obviously.

Yeah, but you still have a 99.999....% chance of not getting your dick amputated on any given day as a Brazilian.

It's still a minuscule chance of getting your dick amputated due to penile cancer. Penile cancer itself is extremely rare. Less than 0.01% chance.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

Still scares me. Not saying it’s logical, just frightening.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Look, I don't have a dick, but fuck, man, 2 a day is 2 too many.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Did you always not have one?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago

Last I checked, and even the time before that, lol

[–] [email protected] 22 points 4 months ago (1 children)

From the article, it sounds like the HPV vaccine would help prevent these penile cancers.
Refresh my memory... weren't Republicans up in arms trying to prevent their children from getting the HPV vaccine?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Well, now I'm even more glad I got the HPV vaccine (I got the one for 9 types), damn.

I always thought it'd be possible that getting HPV could lead to a penile amputation like maybe in insanely rare cases, but holy fuck that 6500 seems like a large number to think about when you consider that 1 is too many.

I am curious what a "partial penis amputation" involves.

Somehow that sounds worse than taking the whole thing

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I've had multiple nightmares where it just comes off in my hand. Not the whole thing, "just the tip."

I don't think it's a 'loss of masculinity' thing, it's more about something dreadful very suddenly happening to my body that I can't undo.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

So I'm trans and find this pretty interesting. I used to have euphoria dreams where it would come off entirely. Now I'm newly post op and I'm having the occasional nightmares where it's come back or worse, I start like disentigrating from inside and things fall out of me. Body horror dreams are wild

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Smoke more weed and your dreams will stop. Doctors hate this one trick.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 months ago

That's actually one of the reasons I stopped smoking. I normally lucid dream almost every night and wanted that back so I mostly quit weed

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Weed does not make my dreams go away.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Welp, I'm going to bed now. Would be interesting to have an amputation in a dream. Let's see

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

Does foreskin count?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

But only for a minute.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago

Cancer Grows at the tip they snip a bit. Grows at the base they take the most of it.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago

Just a little off the top

A reference that no one under 40 will get.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago (3 children)

As a 32YO, I get that reference! I think Lorena Bobbit is still pretty well known.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago

John Bobbitt somehow turned that into a low-quality porn career.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

I guess talk show hosts did get about a decade out of that dick joke.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

Could also be the bobbit worm?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

Slightly under forty, definitely get it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

for funsies, look up the "bobbit worm". It's a marine worm that hunts fish.

then, check out its scientific name. It's a worthy surprise.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

They take the bottom half.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 months ago

Good christ. Wash your dick, get your HPV vaccines, and don't smoke. That sounds like a fucking nightmare if you need your urethra relocated.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago

This is just the feel good story I was looking for today.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

2 a day is manageable from the stand point of what do you do with all these chopped off penises! You just get the specialty furnace lit up and you chuck the dicks in one at a time and watch as they ablate into a gas.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

He was determined to find out what was going on.For five years João, not his real name, went back and forth to specialists who prescribed more medication and ordered new biopsies.

This resulted in more than 4,000 deaths and, over the past decade, there have been more than 6,500 amputations - averaging two each day.Maranhão, the poorest state in Brazil, was found to have the highest incidence rate globally at 6.1 per 100,000 men.Symptoms of penile cancer often start with a sore on the penis that does not heal and a strong-smelling discharge.

Some people get bleeding and colour changes of the penis, too. When detected early, there is a high chance of recovery through treatments such as the surgical removal of the lesion, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. But if left untreated, partial or total amputation of the penis, and possibly other nearby genital organs such as the testicles, may become necessary.João underwent a partial amputation in January and says it was a difficult time.

"However, in total amputation, the urethral orifice can be relocated to the perineum, between the scrotum and the anus, requiring the patient to urinate while sitting on the toilet."

Mauricio Dener Cordeiro of the Brazilian Society of Urology says the persistent infection of human papillomavirus (HPV), a name given to a common group of viruses, is "one of the main risk factors".

"When a man does not expose the glans and fails to clean the foreskin properly, it produces a secretion that accumulates," Dr Cordeiro says.
