I do not think about Bill Maher.

[–] [email protected] 54 points 6 months ago (1 children)

20 years ago I thought he was a sharp, funny, iconoclast. These days, I think he just says stupid outrageous shit to provoke a reaction. He's like human clickbait.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

Same… but like 10 years ago for me

[–] [email protected] 51 points 6 months ago

insufferable

[–] [email protected] 30 points 6 months ago

This is second hand info, but everyone I know who has ever worked for him basically hates him. He's a raging asshole, difficult to work with, and just a horrible human being on a personal level. I've never met him myself, but the people I'm referring to are all pretty awesome, wholesome people so I do trust their judgment.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 6 months ago

Never really cared for him and barely paid any attention to him throughout the years. He just seems like a prick.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 6 months ago

I don't, and now I'm annoyed you made me remember he exists.

I thought he was funny in the 90's. I saw a newer stand up special he did a couple years ago and was totally turned off by his views and the fact that not one of his jokes were actually funny.

Same with Dennis Miller.

I've been told when I went to bitch about that special on Reddit that he was only funny before because he wasn't writing his own jokes, and I'm not sure if that is actually true but it would make sense.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 6 months ago

He's a self-righteous asshole.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 6 months ago

People who don't believe in germ theory shouldn't be listened to

[–] [email protected] 13 points 6 months ago

I find his comedy to be more smug and condescending than humorous or clever.

Don't really know anything else about him. Don't care to either, he can live his life and I can live mine.

I read the whole thread shocked that so many people hate Bill Nye Science Guy, then I re read the title.

Yeah he's an antivaxx douche

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don't hate bill nye, but i definitely don't like him. I didn't grow up watching his show, because i'm not american, but i watched his netflix show where he comes off as a know it all cunt who doesn't even let people talk when he disagrees and treats people like idiots who have other opinions. And i say that as someone who agrees with most of his ideas.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 months ago (1 children)

He's a smarmy self-important jackass who revels in the ability to get as much attention possible by attacking anyone who can't defend themselves.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

I bet myself I would find the word "smarmy" somewhere here. Agreed

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Very irrelevant.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I am generally open to him and his views. I get tired of hearing things that only confirm my own worldview. While I agree with him sometimes, he is just as often challenging to me.

That said, I've been finding his whole recent "kids these days are awful" schtick really tiresome. It feels like an old man shaking a fist at the sky. I have lots to complain about Gen Zs and Millennials but I feel like he is really out of his depth. Every generation thinks their kids are awful.

But when he is on point, he is really on point.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago

I started to watch him as he never pulled punches and picked some great match ups of guests and hot topics.

I stopped because his insufferable ego kept compelling him to continuously talk over everyone with his non-stop opinionated smug. Once I noticed I was just watching one man listening to the sound of his own voice while guests that I wanted to hear from get repeatedly cut off at every third word by his desire to manufacture Jerry Springer type drama, I realised how punchable I truely found him to be.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

For a while it seemed like his guest quality was generally high enough to be watchable, but its been years.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

I think he and John Krasinski should have a contest to determine once and for all whose face looks more like a bowl of mashed potatoes.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

A smug off mug off! I like it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

Classic Boomer, funny sometimes and he gets good guests.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

I've tried watching a stand up special of his. I just couldn't get into it. I did like Religulous though.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

I watch his show every week, and though I don't always agree with him, I do appreciate some media trying to have honest and open conversations about things, versus just each side yelling at each other side type of conversations.

Having said that, he seems pretty myopic about the whole Israeli-Palestinian-Hamas thing going on right now. (But then again, there seems to be a concerted effort being pushed on multiple media outlets like CNN as well right now.)

Also sometimes he gets a little bit into a 'yelling at the clouds to get off his lawn' mode.

But overall, he really tries to get honest conversation going between parties on all sides. I enjoy watching the show every week, including the extra part that is on YouTube afterwards.

Opinion solicited and provided, and people are downvoting you. Dumb.

Personally, he started talking more and more shit about millennials and taking positions I didn’t agree with. And when I’m listening to debate that’s shit take vs shit take… well, I’m not… so I stopped watching

Yeah, I get that allot. :/

Personally, he started talking more and more shit about millennials and taking positions I didn’t agree with.

I was kind of referring to that with my "yelling at clouds to get off his lawn" comment.

I've always figured listening to other perspectives from other gens than their own is a good thing, but some people do not.

And when I’m listening to debate that’s shit take vs shit take… well, I’m not… so I stopped watching

There's definately good show episodes, and some that are not so good. There was one a few weeks ago that was fantastic, and another one right around the same time that was crap. Its hit-or-miss.

I quite like him and his show real time. Don't always agree with him and he often has very insufferable guests on the show, but overall it's way worth watching.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

2 decades ago I might have agreed, but he's more insufferable than his guests and is moving towards being just another reactionary shithead.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I don't see it. Except for a couple of niche issues he is very reasonable and quite pleasent to listen to.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Wasn't he one of the people complaining about schools providing litter boxes for furry students despite there being no evidence of that happening?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I vaguely remember something like that. But he has comedy segments on his show. That sound like something from "I don't know it for a fact, I just know it's true". Which is a fromat which can very easily be taken out of context.

But I'm not sure. Do you know which episode it was in?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I was looking for the kitty litter thing and found this. It's facebook, so open it in a private tab.

He comes across as an out of touch facebook, conservative boomer. Does this count as comedy to you?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, that was pretty funny.
