And I feel pretty pumped about blocking them.

Not a single word on user reaction.

Do we need that, though?

i avoid youtube, so i don't really mind, but if they put more of those and less before or during the video, that would make me avoid it a bit less

I unabashedly pirate with adblockers on my computer and alternative apps on mobile. My mobile app stopped working the other day. I just stopped watching youtube on mobile completely. It is not at all worth it to watch ads for even one minute, in my considered opinion.

Yeah, if at any point YouTube succeeds in killing the adblockers, then I’ll just stop watching youtube and only watch the creators that upload to Nebula

Use a Firefox fork with uBlock and you'll have a decent time of it. Including playback in the background

Grayjay, LibreTube, NewPipe, Invidious, Piped. If one seems to be down, the others always seem to work. Haven't been on YouTube in months.

If pause ads are static, silent, and replace midrolls, sounds like an improvement for everyone.

Replace! Ha! Oh blargerer, you are a wit!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Not for me, often when I pause I'm trying to see the video content paused on something.

I was just following a frittata recipe and my teen came in and we had a brief discussion on how overused video already is. In particular how tough it already is to follow a recipe on YouTube. This will make it impossible.

Then again, they don’t care about me since I already don’t watch YouTube, because of how intrusive the ads plus the poor quality of most content. I subscribe to a news service, but I also stopped looking at recipes there as well since they’re effective at blocking print to file and bookmarks die quickly.

hasn't Pornhub been doing this forever?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

I have a brilliant idea for YouTube: put porn ads in on your pauses and I bet those eyeballs will watch more ads than content! Everyone wins... except the children...

This article didn't explain anything. I still don't know what these ads are.

Thanks for downvoting me instead of explaining it. Very helpful 😂

It did explain it, I thought. Pause ads:

the company said that when you pause a video, it will shrink, and an ad will appear next to it

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 months ago

Because screw you if you want to pause a video to read something

[–] [email protected] -1 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Thank you. I read that part, but it doesn't explain what else happens. It doesn't really give much details. So no ads all throughout the video until it is paused? Does that add disappear when I resume the video?.... Etc. Like more context would be helpful. Unless that's the only thing they know?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I will guarantee you, these will be additional ads, not replacing existing ones.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

Oh I'm pretty sure it's going to be something shitty.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

Of course it disappears when you start playing the video again. Some video sites already have had ads like this for a few years.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

They really will keep pushing this until it's 1% content, 5% sponsorshit, and the remainder ads that are injected straight into your eyeballs like Pulp Fiction. With a fire hose.

Tried showing some people some YT videos on a "smart TV", instead of my usual uBO+SponsorBlock+BlockTube on a PC. It is fucking awful. It verges on being literally unfuckingusable by being so much of a bitch it's easier to just not watch anything on it.
