Did you know that Maslow's hierarchy of needs was actually based off of the Blackfoot indigenous culture, but he essentially flipped the 'pyramid' on its head? Originally, it was meant to be more of a cyclical view (where you take care of society, society takes care of you, all needs are met). He was actually very inspired by this view, but unfortunately adapted it to fit more into the individualist views of the colonizers that continue to exist in most of the western world today. He also never actually put his theories into the pyramid shape we know them to be.

Really interesting to read up on, if you're into that sort of thing. There's a few different articles on it, but I thought this one explained it pretty well.
