The Bab el-Mandeb is a hugely important chokepoint in world trade, and moves around 30% of global oil supply through there, along with 30,000 ships per year.
It's closer to 15% of total global trade, which is huge and really only affects European trade. Between 1.7 to 4 million tons per day of cargo transits the strait, and it is an incredibly tight pinch point, the navigable part of the strait is only a few kilometers across. Ships are currently detouring around the horn of Africa, which adds 15 days to the journey. That's a lot of fuel being burned.

All the more reason for a diplomatic solution, escalating the conflict will only disrupt trade more. A peaceful solution is the only way for trade to resume safely. The USA has no interest in peace in this area, only conflict. The only foreign policy the US has is to sell weapons.
