Potsy Ponciroli, writer/director of the 2021 Western Old Henry is writing The Goonies sequel, with Chris Columbus on board to produce the film alongside Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario of Amblin Entertainment. Lauren Shuler Donner, who was married to The Goonies‘ late director Richard Donner, will serve as an executive producer.

I'm wondering how a sequel with the original actors is going to work. You can't really do a kids adventure with 50-60 year old folks.

Based on other films that had late sequels: they're the parents now, all boring and business like. Their kids are the ones who get into hijinks, but the parents need to reignite their sense of wonder and adventure to rescue the kids.

I think that covers about 80% of the required sequel tropes.
