i think the onion is overestimating the general public's 20th century history knowledge
General public maybe, onion readers maybe not.
Who cares, generalizing content for the masses is how you get the slop Onion was making before. This one is absolutely hilarious for those that know.
Something about the importance of knowing history and repeated doom or whatever.
