I'm annoyed at the ignorant townspeople clashing with the adventurers but I'm not surprised as this is unfortunately a real situation that frequently happens IRL
Yes, a serious tragedy of the commons type of scenario that you see play out all too often. The first example that pops into my mind (since I have some family that live down there) is how much of the Gulf Coast is threatened by climate change and fossil fuels extraction, but that industry also provides tons of economic opportunities for good jobs. There is a really good New Yorker article about it (archive link) that has stuck with me ever since I read it.
