Except in the states where most of the population lives, one of the duopoly parties has a full-on monopoly and your general election vote actually doesn't matter for any office of substance (or primary if you have the misfortune to be a member of the DNC, the party that only allows primaries against the 6 progressives left in the party)
I agree we should get rid of the electoral college.
You could always vote for downticket candidates competing within their party for other offices
You could in some states. In states with a strong enough of a democrat monopoly, the party picks candidates ala the CCP, and destroys anyone who dares compete (like the NY dems did to Scott Stringer for daring to run against the anointed Eric Adams).
Still matters because the president isn't the only thing on the ballot.
That's a great argument for Biden dropping out to not drag down all the swing state seats where the dems are ahead but he's behind!
Which office doesn't have substance exactly?
Depends on the municipality. In NYC, you have "borough presidents," which are county level executive officers with no actual responsibilities (this was Eric Adams previous "job" before mayor). Virtually every municipality has its share of random do-nothing offices like that.
