As per the title, I have a newcomer into linux that handed me a laptop to install with a recommended distro.

Being a user very much used to windows, I opted to install Lnx Mint, considering this person may also want to game a little bit in the future.

Install went flawlessly but the screen resolution is so high the fonts and desktop icons were so small it made difficult to read the icons text.

I tried to tweak the icons and fonts to usuable size but the overall feel of the desktop is still... stretched, for lack of a better word.

The laptop is a mistery brand, running a full Intel machine. And I say mistery because when I took a look into windows, the touchpad was identified as a Lenovo, but the machine is just an unbranded generic one.

Hardware profile

• Intel Core i3-500SU
• 8GB RAM
• Intel HD Graphics 5500 (BDW GT2), 1920x1080 max resolution, on 14.2 inch screen

Any suggestions on how to solve the issue?

The distro family trees are like different pantheons.

Distros are like individual gods. Community developers are priests and end-users are the commoners who pray for blessings, good fortune, and happy lives. Priests direct the prayers of commoners to their respective gods.

There is the Debian pantheon, ancient gods of peace and stillness.

The Arch pantheon, progressive gods that bring revolution along with a bit of chaos.

The Red Hat pantheon, gods tha- wtf am I writing?

this is a topic i've been heavily involved with because i still consider myself to be someone who prefers using technology at a very beginner friendly level, plus it's very good when a linux operating system makes you feel right at home when it has a modern desktop environment. this is why i really like gnome, its simplicity and usability is something available for everyone, for beginners and for a lot of other people, but if you had to, say, rearrange xfce or kde for someone who was an elderly person or an absolute beginner so that they wouldn't have any trouble using linux, how would you do it? (screenshot is my current linux mint desktop, very simple and extremely user friendly!!!!)

I've just started to take notes about the LPIC1 and LPIC2 certifications.

So I thought to share them to maybe help someone else. English is not my first language, so maybe you can just tell me what do you think and how to improve the structure / vocabary / markdown / everything else.

I'm about at 10% (I think) of the learning path (just finished topic 102.5), but I'll push new topics as soon as I read and summarize them.

Hi there, linux noob here. I have managed to install Mint 22, dual boot with win11. Everything seems to be working great, except one small problem that keeps me from using mint.
Whenever my computer is not playing a sound, after about 6 seconds, my external speakers will start playing static until a noise is played (a song or even just pressing vol +/-).
I've searched around a bit, but haven't found anything to fix it so far. I've looked on Mint forums (and asked questions but probably did it wrong cuz nobody responded). I used GPT a bit and I think that might have been a mistake. I timeshifted back to revert any changes cuz it's scary.
I ended up getting the powersave mode to turn off in PulseAudio, but that didn't fix it either.
Any suggestions or ideas would be tremendously appreciated. I kinda just gave up for a bit and am back on windows, which is quite unfortunate, I'm sure you'll agree.
I'm on a Nitro AN515-58, let me know if any more info would be helpful.

hey nerds, I'm getting myself a new personal laptop as a treat, but I very much do not want windows 11 shitting it up. Is there a linux distro with caveman-compatible instructions for installation and use? I want to think about my OS as little as possible while actually using it.

I've got one friend who uses mint, but I've also seen memes dunking on it so who knows. I actually really only know what I've seen from you all shitposting in other communities

Hey there, I'm having a trouble with my Yubikey not showing me the TOPT passcodes I have saved to it, It DOES show Passkeys though. I don't have this problem when I plug it into my phone, so I'm really not sure what the problem is. Anybody know what the fix is?

EDIT: I figured out that for whatever reason, the Flathub version just doesn't function properly. When I install the tarball from Yubico's website, the executable DOES work right, but I can't seem to figure out how to make the .desktop file install into the programs list.

Hello! I want to run headless VNC server with app running in cage compositor. I can run cage by this command: WLR_HEADLESS_OUTPUTS=1 WLR_BACKENDS=headless WLR_LIBINPUT_NO_DEVICES=1 cage -d and then wayvnc. But it always uses 1920x1080 resolution. How can I change it?

Hi everyone, I use hyprland on archlinux and recently some of my software just dont even open anymore. I am not sure what kind of log i can provide but here is what i did: i do system update everyday, i also play a bit with Kodi and qt5 yesterday. I am not sure what is the issues right now but it seem to be a native package or dependencies issue because heroic Flatpak work fine(didnt try bitwarden or vscodium tho). Any help would mean a lot for me. Thanks!

The software that don't work: vscodium-bin(AUR), Heroic-launcher-bin(AUR) and bitwarden-desktop(official repo) refuse to open at all. Steam(official repo) open and crash loop

Fix: use hyprctl setcursor theme size in my case i use bibata

what should i know?? will it go faster than xubuntu? because it doesn't use any snap applications?, will it have a modern ui? because, no offense, xubuntu's ui looks very outdated and i know i can change it but i want something straight out of the box, i've seen screenshots of mint xfce and it sorta looks like GNOME!!! amazing woa!!yea linux mint let's go!! what will be the pros be for using linux mint xfce please?? over xubuntu

I thought this would be hard, but turns out the following oneliner does it, with maybe no sideeffects ?

This creates a bash alias for "docker ps" , every other command should run as normal

Now I just need to remember to run this one liner on every single computer I use in the future...

New Features:

Personally I don't watch videos on software (except for skimming tutorials) since I prefer to learn about topics with written tutorials or Reddit. Software influencers have been on the rise for the past several years, everything from grifters claiming they can help you start an SWE career, to ones that make tutorials and showcases on software.

I'm more interested in hearing about the later. I came across found this discussion: What can we learn from Neovim’s rise in popularity? : emacs, with comments claiming that Youtubers like ThePrimeagen have helped a lot with making Neovim popular. I crossposted it to r/neovim and many so far many users there said that they found Neovim through ThePrimeagen's videos.

Quick and dirty is this:

Running a new dual boot system. Windows boots fine and fast. Grub bootloader grinds and grunts to startup. Systemd checks point to Fedora waiting on the Win10 disk to boot (+45s!!!). Obviously, I don't need that drive to run, but Fedora/Bootloader thinks it should.

Disconnected the Win10 drive, Fedora booted in 3.6s.

So... Windows bootloader knows to ignore the Fedora OS drive and launches fine. Fedora Bootloader insists it try everything to get that Win10 drive running to my own detriment.

Is there a way to just ignore the Win10 drive the way Win10 ignores Fedora?

Been scratching my head on this one for a bit to be honest.

EDIT: Seems the issue was caused by RAID incompatibility from my internal backups for Win10. The RAID drives wrongly pointed the finger at the boot disk because the only thing I could really make sense of in diagnostics was the Win10 boot stalling for 45+ seconds. Once I disconnected all the drives and incrementally reconnected them I quickly realised it was the backup drives and not a boot disk conflict as I wrongly assumed.
