I was sent an email to someone as part of an ongoing thread of emails in a conversation.

I drafted a reply, but felt a bit unsure so I sent it to someone I trust for them to look at first. Initially, the draft had been made by hitting the reply button to the original sender, but I removed them from the to: field and very thoroughly checked they were indeed removed before sending my potential response to this third party. The 3rd party replied to me and for a second my heart stopped because their reply was in the same conversation thread and it looked a lot like the whole exchange between them and myself was now broadcast to the very person I was trying to carefully word my reply to. Making it look even more like that was the case, was that the signature of the person who sent me the original I wanted to reply to was at the bottom of the third party's response to me along with their comments. What seems to have happened is that because I pressed the 'reply' button, despite changing the sender, it still included the whole thread of emails until that point. Which makes sense but was very much not what I was expecting since I don't recall seeing that there in the email before sending it to the 3rd party. I suppose it must have been.

Anyway, it seems to have been alright, there's no trace I can find that the exchange between myself and the third party has made its way back to the person that sent me the messages in the first place. But it's very messy and scary that this, to my mind, separate, conversation thread is now all wrapped in to the same one. It seems like begging for trouble even if I dodged it this time. It's my fault for making it a reply instead of a separately composed message to the 3rd party, but can I manually move those messages out of the thread in mail so I don't see them there in future?

After years of using MacOS I somehow only just now became aware you even could copy the filepath at all (outside of dragging in to terminal which is just stupid) so I'm very happy to discover that, but the thing is, for the most part the reason I want to do this is for easy navigation of a file browser by copying paths from one window or tab to another, especially when I have an item selected in an open file browser window and need to specify in a file browser prompt where to save something.

In those instances on Windows for example, I will press the F4 key to select the text field of the address bar in explorer and copy the parent directory path of an item. If I really need it I can get the exact path of the item itself without the mouse too . While I'm super glad I can now approach this usefulness in Finder, the mouse totally interrupts the flow and begins to make the increased efficiency from copying paths only marginally better than just clicking through folder trees since you stop what you're doing and move hands to the mouse already anyway at that point. I'd love to just immediately copy the current path I'm in into a Finder window and use the cmd+shift+G option in another window or prompt to go the same place. The second half of that operation is easy enough, but getting the path on to the clipboard isn't because of needing the mouse.

I feel like an old grandpa trying to use a computer, but I legit can't find this anywhere and I used to use it often.

If I'm composing a message, when I'm done, I used to press cmd+return to send the message. One of many little QOL things for me that involve using the keyboard rather than the mouse wherever possible or practical. The closest reference I've been able to find as a replacement is cmd+shift+D to "send emails" which is both less convenient and also a bit vague. I want to send this email, as in the one I'm composing or which has window focus right now. Is 'send emails' all emails? Like all open windows if you've got a couple of drafts on the go? All drafts including those that aren't open as well?

Is there a new key command for what cmd+return used to do?

Hi, I’m wondering what the best way would be to make a backup of my iCloud Photo Library, consisting of about 60.000 pictures. If I try to export them from my computer, it tries to download them all and I don’t have enough disk space by far.

Someone gimmie a good free clock widget that can have a clear background. Please.

Hi all. I was wondering how iOS handles Contacts images, when it comes to encryption. It would be simpler without ADP (Advanced Data Protection), but I have it enabled.

ADP end-to-end encrypts your images, but contacts still uses the legacy (less private) encryption methods. So what happens with the photo tied to the Contact? Is it encrypted, or not? I’d assume as it’s Contact data, it gets treated as part of everything else the Contact holds. I’d just like to know for certain, hence this post. Bonus points if you can provide a source.

@apple Is anyone using the App Flora Incognita on iOS?

Although forbidden in system settings, the App on my iPhone has full access to photo gallery...

Would be glad if anyone could validate the behavior on their phone.

The Foxconn factory located in Sriperumbudur is gearing up to roll out the latest iPhone 15 models.

iPhone 15 production in India depends on the stock of imported components and the ramp-up of production lines at the Foxconn plant near Chennai.

Other Apple suppliers in India, such as Pegatron and a Wistron facility soon to be acquired by the Tata Group, are also expected to join the iPhone 15 production machine.

Looking for a free app that allows me to record my calls, incoming and outgoing, without having to dial out and merge calls. Is that possible on the iPhone? I used to have one in Android that did this, but all the ones I see in the AppStore are the conference call or merge call type. I don’t care too much about quality as long as I can hear the other person.

Yes, I am in a one party authorization state.

Excerpt (and context):

Apple Maps’ offering might surprise people who remember its disastrous launch in 2012, which the Guardian described as the company’s “first significant failure in years”. Users were more than furious – they were lost, sometimes dangerously so. In Australia, police had to rescue tourists from the huge Murray-Sunset national park, after Maps placed the city of Mildura in the wrong place by more than 40 miles. Some of the motorists located by police had been stranded for 24 hours without food or water. In Ireland, ministers had to complain directly to Apple after a cafe and gardens called “Airfield” was designated by the service as an actual airport.

But mostly the map was just glitchy and unhelpful, its directions always a little off kilter. Users revolted and Apple made a rare retreat, allowing Google Maps to be used as the default on many iPhone apps and apologizing for the product.

Apple announced that it now has 1 billion paying subscribers to its services and that revenue from these sales has reached an all-time high.

In its third-quarter financial results, reported after the stock market closed on Aug. 3, Apple reported $21 billion in net sales for its services category out of $81 billion in total net sales, meaning that these subscriptions now account for a quarter of the Cupertino, California-based technology company’s total sales.

This might be the wrong place to ask this question but, as someone who has owned more Apple products that I could count, I'm interested in reducing my dependency on them (and tech, in general) moving forward.

A significant portion of my life has included spending time and money on devices and applications to "make my life easier / more productive". It's becoming all too apparent though that this has created a reliance on technology that can become difficult to separate from if a company, such as Apple, makes changes that are displeasurable or disruptive to the habits I've adopted my daily life.

I mean, my bluetooth trackpad is acting wonky right now, so that's not fun. Wired always works. Is there too much technology?

I am not a fan of having to keep a phone on me at all times. It's always in silent mode and visual notifications are kept to a minimum. I can and do sometimes go two to three days without even knowing where my phone is. If I leave the house, I more often just take my Apple Watch and a note pad. (However, with the realization that Apple is changing the Watch UX with OS10, I'm not so sure I'll be using it much longer.)

I'll go through my phone once in a while and delete apps I rarely use. If I need something, I can easily reinstall it. The only things I really need a phone for are Maps for navigation, Safari to open a restaurant's menu, to manage my Apple Wallet, to get a Lyft, to view my Fitness / Health info, and to access an MFA Authenticator app.

After my Apple TV, my iPad is probably my most used device, closely followed by my Mac mini. (I have a MacBook for work - I don't consider that part of this conversation.) Thinking about it though, I could probably eliminate the iPad in favor of the desktop experience. Since there is not Finder replacement on iPad, I need a MacOS computer to mange my music, photos, files, etc. Although, I hate sitting at a desk more than I need to already for work. If ~~MacOS~~ Finder were available on an iPad, I might be able to ditch a desktop computer.

I just checked Screen Time on my phone - I'm averaging about 1 Hour / Week. My iPad is about 4 Hours / Week. Why do I even have these devices?

So, my problem is that I need(?) each of these devices for just a small handful of tasks. Stepping back from it, it feels stupid that I have all this crap. It's a lot of money spent and it's a lot of opportunity for something to break my daily habits. Although, speaking of habits, I have to admit I feel an addiction to these things that prevents me from getting rid of them.

Aren't we all addicted to out devices? Are we actively encouraging or reducing our dependency on technology and what affect does this have on our mental well being?

I'm wondering if anyone has taken steps to replace or eliminate devices or experiences. How are you living a minimalist technology life?

Last month, 9to5Mac exclusively shared the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro design with basic CAD images. Since then, we’ve been working to gather more exclusive details from MFi accessory makers, new detailed CAD obtained by 9to5Mac’s Max Weinbach, and other sources.

All of this information has been corroborated by multiple sources, and we are confident that this is your best look yet at iPhone 15 Pro.

I'm hoping that this project is just not generally representative of performance across the board with After Effects and that there's a lot of specifics making it so slow.

I started a project on my old hackintosh, which used an i7 6700 CPU, with 32GB of DDR3 ram and an NVIDIA GTX970. It was always going to be a big ask of the machine because I'm working with a PSD file that is 5472x3468 as the main material used an seen in my composition. The idea is to have this PSD image appear to be made out of glass, evidenced by cracks appearing in a very specific pattern defined by a separate illustrator 'cracks.ai' file, and then chunks of the image falling off based on the shapes made by those lines in the illustrator file. Though the source file is high resolution the composition is HD (pillarboxed to fit the image in correct aspect ratio).

The best I was able to come up with to do this was use the shatter effect with a custom shatter map based on a version of the crack lines illustrator file where the shapes created by those lines are each filled in with a solid colour based on the allowable custom shatter map colours used by the shatter effect. In order to precisely time the falling of each of the 12 shards of the image I made 12 precompositions themselves containing many precompositions which basically make a version of the source psd where only one individual shard at a time is visible and then a shatter effect is applied to each such precomposition using a duplicate of the cracks shatter map with only one individual shape visible at any one time to ensure that there is only one piece of glass in each precomp with a shatter effect. This means a lot of stacking of precomps each making use of a high resolution PSD imported as layers, not as footage. I'm guessing this adds to the strain. It was definitely taxing my old computer's modest specs. I also understand that the shatter effect is a very old effect and that it is 8bit.

Having switched the project over to my new 32GB ram, m2 max MBP I was really hoping for substantially faster render times even dreaming that perhaps it might even be real time. Not only wasn't it real time, but it seems to be no better than my old machine and possibly even worse. I can't really account for this, I'm not sure if this old 8bit effect works with GPU, but even if it doesn't, the CPU should be vastly more capable I would have thought. Based on what I've described, is this to be expected?

Just got a new mac and while I had disabled this on my old one, everything's moved around and I can't figure out how to get rid of this.

I don't use the multiple desktops thing and I like to use the Magnet app for window snapping. At the moment I can't drag the window to the top of the screen to make it occupy the full size of the screen using Magnet because instead it opens up the ribbon at the top for managing multiple desktops.

  1. Go to Settings ➜ Accessibility ➜ Siri
  2. Turn on "Type to Siri"
  3. Go to the Shortcuts app
  4. Create shortcuts that ask for input with short names (they're not case sensitive)
  5. Your iPhone now has a command palette

A screenshot of an iPhone with Siri being typed to and running a shortcut with the name "dg". The shortcut searches DuckDuckGo. The input is "Siri as a command palette".

Hello! I have made a macOS client for Lemmy - Leomard. It's an initial version of the app, and my first macOS app made for the public.

Features

  • Mac-native client
  • Fast, small and light (only 9.2 MB)
  • Open source (GPLv3)
  • Beautiful responsive interface

Of course, it's a very early version, some features are missing (ex. image uploading), and you may encounter a bug here and there.

Don't forget to follow Leomard's community: [email protected]

Or straight to the project’s Git: https://github.com/Athlon007/Leomard

If you have questions, feel free to ask :)

Hi everybody! This is the initial release of Leomard - a native macOS client app written in Swift using SwiftUI. It’s still in very early phase of development, features are missing, but it’s a start. Feedback is most welcome!

I have run Parallels for several years (mostly to do yearly business taxes), and I have resisted installing the Parallels Toolbox because I am wary of such things.

Nonetheless, I am curious about it and was wanting to know if anyone actually uses (and likes, or hates) it?
