Hotel Arbez (en.wikipedia.org)
submitted 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Today, the Franco-Swiss border passes through the kitchen, dining room, hallway and several rooms of the Hotel Arbez:

  • The dining room is divided by the boundary.
  • The bar is entirely located in France, though the boundary passes just outside its front door.
  • The bed in the honeymoon suite is bisected by the border, with half in France and half in Switzerland.
  • The main hall and stairway are bisected by the border. The lower half of the stairs lie in France, the upper half, beginning on the seventh step is in Switzerland;
  • Another room has its bathroom in France, while the rest of the room is in Switzerland.
  • The annex to the hotel is located entirely in Switzerland.

Today, the Hotel Arbez is operated by the French company SARL Arbez Franco Suisse, which pays taxes equally to both countries.

I've been working on a small platformer game that squarely revolves around Demoman's mobility mechanics from TF2 (think Sticky Jumper, stickyjumping, trimping, etc..) but in 2D. I'm thinking that there could be potential for something funny and wacky from coalescing some ideas from an FPS game and 2D platformers like VVVVVV, Rayman Origins/Legends and some Flash games from way back then..

So far I only have the movement and projectile physics down.. my artistic abilities leave... a lot to be desired. I haven't decided on the game's core mechanics just yet either, but now I turn to you to gather some inspiration :).

EDIT: attached some gameplay footage

***This is a live reporting of what is happening in the courtroom right now.

Crown wraps opening statement

Donkers wraps up her statement by saying there may be moments when the jury will find it difficult to put themselves in E.M.’s shoes.

She also tells the jury: “Be vigilant, and do not allow yourself to be tempted by the myths and stereotypes that are pervasive in society about how victims of sexual assault should behave.

“What jury service demands of you is an assessment of the evidence based only on what the law is, not what you thought the law was, or what you think it should be or what popular media may have led you to think.”

When the state’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in the nation’s most successful youth climate suit, it sparked a Republican backlash that could lead to fundamental changes in Montana’s courts and environmental laws.

So sorry about that downtime, our VM was unexpectedly shut down. Everything should be up and federation will level out soon.

Again so sorry. I'm going to set up an uptime and status page on a different server so I can communicate if things go sideways again.

Jem Bendell is the originator of the concept of Deep Adaptation.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the term, Wiki summarizes Deep Adaptation as:

Deep Adaptation is a concept, agenda, and international social movement. It presumes that extreme weather events and other effects of climate change will increasingly disrupt food, water, shelter, power, and social and governmental systems. These disruptions would likely or inevitably cause uneven societal collapse in the next few decades. The word “deep” indicates that strong measures are required to adapt to an unraveling of industrial lifestyles, following prior usages such as deep ecology. The agenda includes values of nonviolence, compassion, curiosity and respect, with a framework for constructive action.

Article excerpt:

Many of us are lucky that societal collapse is still only a concept. It can be our way of understanding the increasing difficulties we experience, or the increasing damage to the natural world, or can describe a future breakdown of basic services in our societies. However, for some people the collapse of basic systems for living has been happening for a long time. Moreover, some people are experiencing the daily risk of being killed, the pain of hunger, grieving loved ones, and coping with trauma from regular bombing and displacement. A military-induced collapse of society is one that could be stopped, unlike the wider collapse that unfolds due to environmental and other factors. Therefore any such volitional collapse is something we could try to prevent, or reverse. It is something that calls for our attention and action. That is especially so if our taxes are funding part of it or our financial savings are benefiting from it.

What I have just written seems self-evident. It should not need explaining. Therefore, it is heartbreaking that a few people who made the reduction of harm from societal collapse a major theme in their lives have been blocking people with a similar perspective from discussing how we might help people in need, with no transparency about that censorship, which means we develop a mistaken impression of the response of our fellow man. I am writing about it here because I think that with your help this situation can change, and with it, both systems and cultural dynamics will improve in the Deep Adaptation communities and movement.

In addition to wider calls to action, Jem is asking those in support to sign a statement that he has created. If you would like to do so, you may sign up for his mailing list and he will provide a link via email.

  • Farmers in a cacao-producing region of southwestern Côte d’Ivoire have seen their yields decline so much that they’re abandoning their plantations and considering switching to other crops.
  • They say cacao, long a mainstay of the agricultural economy of this region and the country, is no longer profitable due to changing weather patterns and an increase in plant diseases like swollen shoot.
  • An agronomist says the changing weather is partly due to deforestation caused by the expansion of cacao production in recent decades, and recommends agroforestry and reforestation as a remedy.
