spent more time than I want to admit this weekend working on a shape cutout thing for the illustrations and fucking hated the results, so I ended up just searching up images and then combining and editing things that I liked

here's the final product. I've included the PNGs I printed from in case you liked the blessing and you're the kind of person who would give a homemade card, too. mine is printed on toned cardstock; trimmed card dimensions are 4.5x12" printed, 4.5"x6" folded.

I'm making a card to go along with our gift, but deciding what to write inside is hard! I did some searching and compiling of bits and pieces that I liked, and here's what I've got so far, please give your edits/suggestions/etc

May the Sun bring you new energy by day,
And may the Moon bring you peace every night.

May your wisdom and courage never fail,
May your kindness be returned multiplied,
And may beauty forever grace your heart and gaze.

May you always have a warm home to return to,
A gentle word offered to you, and a safe haven to rest your head.

May the rains softly wash away your cares and refresh you.
May the storms pass you by, the fires only warm you,
The tides bear you up, and the earth be a friend beneath your feet.

May you forever walk in harmony,
May you always know your blessings,
And may you never want for more.

Since I returned from my visit, I have been trying to place my experiences there into a larger context. The reality on the ground is so devastating, and the future appears so bleak, that I have allowed myself to indulge in some counter-factual history and to entertain some hopeful speculations about a different future. I ask myself, what would have happened had the newly created state of Israel fulfilled its commitment to enact a constitution based on its Declaration of Independence? That same declaration which stated that Israel “will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel; it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture; it will safeguard the Holy Places of all religions; and it will be faithful to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations”.

agony-deep

this was a devastating read

Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug
Make you wanna holler, "HI-DE-HO!"
Burns your tummy, don't ya know?
Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug

Grape wine in a mason jar
Homemade and brought to school
By a friend of mine, 'n' after class
Me and him and this other fool decide
That we'll drink up what's left
Chug-a-lug, so we helped ourself
First time for everything
My ears still ring

Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug
Make you wanna holler, "HI-DE-HO!"
Burns your tummy, don't ya know?
Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug

4-H and the FFA
On a field trip to the farm
Me 'n' a friend sneak off behind
This big old barn where we uncovered
A covered-up moonshine still
And we thought we'd drink our fill
And I swallered it with a smile
I run ten mile

Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug
Make you wanna holler, "HI-DE-HO!"
Burns your tummy, don't ya know?
Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug

Jukebox 'n' sawdust floor
Somethin' like I ain't never seen
And I'm just goin' on 15
But with the help of my finaglin'
Uncle I get snuck in
For my first taste of sin
I said, "Lemme have a big old sip!"
I done a double back flip

Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug
Make you wanna holler, "HI-DE-HO!"
Burns your tummy, don't ya know?
Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug

Are you involved in an org? Why/Why not?

If you are, what's it like for you as a neurodivergent person? Do you feel like you have a niche or otherwise fit in?

should probably preface by saying that comedy is one of my special interests, improv and stand-up comedy being my favorite flavors

I saw a thing in the paper today about a local comedy collective offering classes.

From the snooping I've done online, it seems like it's led by a guy who did comedy elsewhere but now lives here in rural shit-hole Ohio and is trying to create a community for it. It's a PoC leading it, which instantly gives me more faith in the endeavor.

The pictures they've posted from previous improv workshops give me the impression that these are my favorite flavors of weirdos.

But - presumably like most of you? - I am a very specific flavor of strange that most people don't like, and tbqh, I'm going through an particularly difficult period in which a strong dose of negative feedback could be extremely harmful.

but I'm also desperately lonely and struggling to figure out if there's anywhere I fit in at all anywhere in the world

Engaging with this opportunity seems like a big risk - maybe I could meet some people with similar interests with whom I could get along, but maybe also I could feel terribly rejected in a way that might be horrifically harmful for me right now

I tried to bring it up with my husband in the hope that I could get him to do it with me, but before I even got that far in the conversation, he was scoffing at the very existence of the class, so I feel like a real dumbass for even being interested

is this stupid?

I think anybody over 40 playing rock on stage is cringey

did you know that in addition to continuing hobbies and pastimes they did as a young person, sometimes old people fuck??

I did not understand orgasms or realize I wasn't having them with my partners until I finally did have one. 😂 I genuinely didn't understand that it could feel that good until it did.

Another win for abstinence-based sex ed in rural America!

That is hilarious!

Ignoring for a moment the right of an occupied people to resist their oppression: "Hamas" does not include all Palestinians or all residents of Gaza. There are innocent civilians in Gaza, and collective punishment is against international law.

But back to that right: could you please point to an example of an oppressed people successfully freeing themselves non-violently?

[–] [email protected] 38 points 1 year ago (9 children)

Any thoughts on the decades of increasing oppression the Palestinian people have suffered or are you just pretending this uprising is happening in a vacuum?

What is the permissible amount of violence with which to respond to attempted genocide?

I hate to be callous

Then don't be?

They addressed this in the Hamas press conference - not only do they not have enough personnel to answer all the calls for help they were getting from people trapped in the rubble, but they don't have the equipment to move the rubble, and also it keeps getting bombed so they wouldn't even be able to do much even if they had the people and equipment.

There was a minor map glitch in my neighborhood that kept directing people to my house instead of my friend's house half a mile down the road, and it took me actual weeks of effort (persistent back and forth with them, repeatedly sending map screenshots and data from the county auditor, refusing to let my case get closed, etc) to get it corrected, which I had assumed was because it was a relatively small thing affecting a couple dozen people a year.

People fruitlessly asking them to fix a bridge out notice for 10 fucking years is horrifying.

Me too, this is one of the main things that stuck with me. Honestly, idk how to think of myself except in relation to my service to community, it has really shaped my entire experience of the world.

It's not unreasonable or excessive to respond violently to oppression.
