I've been to western Oregon and yeah, I see what you mean. There's quite a bit of variation to be found across the forests of Norway, but what you see here is pretty typical for south-eastern Norway, I'd say.

Many do it to ensure they get overhead space for their carry-on, a result of airlines charging for checked luggage.
