An stranger on the internet just gave you license to say a historically racist term, how convenient for you. Next they'll be some /r/asablackman posters saying its okay for you to use the n-word, because it doesn't bother them.

Instagram, facebook, twitter, youtube, and reddit: all well-known for improving the mental health and attention-span of their users. /s

The US government isn’t in charge of one of the largest social media platforms in the world. US corporations are absolutely doing this as well, but that’s an argument for more regulation not to grant China free reign

US-run social media apps are pretty much now just arms of the US surveillance state, functioning both as pro-US propaganda machines, and tools to spy on the communications of the entire world.

For example, the most popular social media app in India for example, is facebook. The US controls the main method of news and communication for a country much larger than its own.

I removed this because it has nothing to do with linux specifically, and as expected, it brought out a lot of people defending the use of this historically racist term, and /asablackman'ing it.

I've reinstated it and removed the offending comments for now.

Also I don't know why this needs a discussion at all. There's hundreds of words in english for something that looks good, and you can be more specific about it : snazzy, sleek, cool, streamlined, nifty, retro

Side point, but I've added some additional settings and tweakability for votes here, that'll be in the next major release.

Adds 3 options for post upvotes, comment upvotes, post downvotes, and comment downvotes:

  • ability to allow all votes
  • allow local only (block federated), or
  • disable all

So hopefully that will help fight vote brigading.

The microblogging format is truly awful. I've seen professors and incredibly smart writers get into childish feuds with each other, because the format almost encourages it by rewarding dunks and gotchas.

Forcing people to try to communicate over text without paragraphs, or any way to make themselves more clear, is not a good system.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

True, but when the US projects the crimes it commits against the world onto its enemies, we need to see actual evidence.

spy on american citizens

BTW is there any actual proof tiktok is doing what the above US companies are? And not just some vague orientalism from anglophone media sources?

Also lets not pretend a US tiktok ban has anything to do with security or privacy. It's about being unable to silence pro-palestine views, which they're able to do only on the US-run platforms.

About Habit-Maker

Have you found it difficult to build new habits? Habit-Maker uses rewards and encouragements to help get over initial willpower required to form new habits.

Features

Rewards

Habit-Maker game-ifies making habits by giving you rewards each time you check a habit. It shows the following progress metrics:

  • Streaks - The # of days you've completed your habit in a row.
  • Points - points for checking habits, with multipliers for continuing your streak.
  • % progress to your 66-day-ingrained habit.

Encouragements

Studies have found that encouragements are vital to building new habits. Habit-Maker takes advantage of this by allowing you to create your own custom encouragements.

Before creating a habit, take a few minutes and think about why you want to build this habit. What benefits will it bring you, and how your life will improve by doing it?

A good encouragement should have:

  • An initial congratulations for completing the habit.
  • A message tailored to you, about the benefits or reasons why you should continue.

Some examples of good encouragements:

Activity Encouragement
Brushing your teeth Great job! Your friends will like seeing your whiter teeth, and less coffee stains.
Lifting weights for 10m Nice job! People will notice your better physique.
Cardio for 10m Well done! Studies show you're going to live a lot longer!
Working out for 10m Excellent! You'll have more energy, and feel healthier by continuing!
Meditating for 10m Nice! You're on your way to bettering the lives of those around you, by developing your awareness.

Completing a habit

Once a habit has been formed, its relatively easy to continue doing it, almost as if it were on auto-pilot. Research shows that ~40% of our daily activities are habits that don't require much (if any) willpower once they've been formed.

I've been listening to a ton of classic xmas albums lately, and want some more to add to my xmas playlist.

Thx in advance.

My favorite that I've used for years, foursquare, is shutting down in a few days. Pretty bummed because I found some of the best restaurants I've ever been to with it. 15 years and thousands of reviews, all in the trash now.

Google maps is useless for most cities, in mine every restaurant has a 4.7-4.8, and seems gamed.

Yelp is an awful company I'd rather not use, and its based on top reviewers, rather than reviews.

Tripadvisor is missing way too much to be useful.

What are ppl using nowadays?

Here is our regular update that explains what we have been working on for the past two weeks. This should allow average users to keep up with development, without reading Github comments or knowing how to program.

We should also have a bugfix release for a few issues with the last release, and have 0.19.8 sometime soon.
