I had been playing for 15 years or so before I joined a band. The trick is to not aim too high, make music that is a bit (but not too much) below your skill level. That way you are able to get the hang of songs relatively easy, which boosts your confidence. From there on you can keep growing.

I want tot go one further and say music cassettes. Love their sound and way more compact than vinyl. Sadly, there's no good new hardware being made at the moment, although I really like my We Are Rewind player, it's far from HiFi.

And that's why Bandcamp exists. No DRM, whatever format you like and you support the artist.
