I enjoyed this ep. Not much different than the original, but it allowed me to get more used to the new style and new VAs. I think Holo's new VA was a good choice. She sounds more playful than the previous one, which I think fits a bit better.

Edit, apparently, Holo's VA is not new. She sounds very different, so I could not tell. Signs of a good VA I suppose.

Having not seen the original, I was a bit surprised at Holo's voice at first (last episode). Her voice was softer and she is cheekier than I had thought based solely on the character design. With this episode, I didn't think about the VAs at all, but was instead just fully on board with the characters.

That's good. Having seen the original, I can't help but compare haha

Slow episode this week (feel that will be a theme with this show). We get to really spend some time with our two leads as they talk about life and the world around them. Holo's bit about how the farmers she used to watch over didn't care about time felt very relatable to me. I have some family members that run a farm and they often say similar things about events like daylight savings, holidays, etc. Basically that the cows/corn doesn't care about any of that, so they can't either. They just have to do things according to nature's schedule.

With this talk about currency exchange and arbitrage, I get the feeling that we are going to be having lots of economic talk in this show. It is a bit surprising to me that this wine merchant hadn't ever bartered with goods before. Perhaps since he deals in a luxury good, his clients are wealthy enough to afford the convenience of hard currency?

Finally, just wanted to say that this screenshot out of context is hilarious:

Yep, this show has a lot of economic themes and topics. But not just talks. Lawrence is a merchant after all

Still not sure about this show. I'm definitely interested in the coin plot; it seems like we're setting up for a nice little mystery with some con artist themes. On the other hand, I still feel like (aside from the one flashback) we're not getting much from Lawrence as a character. It seems like we're meant to assume he's clever and a capable merchant, but I just feel like we haven't seen him do anything. The animation quality also felt a bit off this episode, which I wasn't expecting.

As someone who watched the original anime from 2008 and read LNs I can tell you that there's a lot to uncover. While in my opinion animation is better than it was in 2008, I feel it lacks that bit of magic original had. Opening is good, though I liked old one more. As for story coin plot is just a beginning. There's going to be a lot more of those and every one of them is really thought out. Lawrence is not like those 200 IQ protagonists that are always 10 steps ahead. He's just a quite smart human, not more than that. He will have his ups and downs. Overall a very well written character. It will be clear by the end of the season or even sooner.

Glad this is getting positive reception so far. I'll be curious to see what gets adapted going forward given the OG anime skipped some things and slightly modified others, but so far this is really close (if not exact) to what's in the LN.

I really enjoyed the original, and this remake is fantastic for bringing it to a new audience, but as much as I love seeing something I enjoyed get a new coat of paint there's still something.... Missing, from this adaptation I suppose? Not that it's bad or it's missing anything through any fault of its own, it's just that something about spice and wolf is greatly benefitted from the warmth of older animation. I do prefer the new voice acting though, the performances feel more nuanced and true to the characters. It's an interesting give and take

In any case this episode is as charming as always but it's definitely making me consider medium of animation more than I really have watching other shows.

It feels like this show is about the change between from the old world of spirits and their magic, to the new world ruled by the church and beginnings of commerce and science.

I'm not familiar with the source material, nor any prior adaptations, but I feel that this sadly won't end well for our Wise Wolf...
