Rising crime?
Technology
A nice place to discuss rumors, happenings, innovations, and challenges in the technology sphere. We also welcome discussions on the intersections of technology and society. If it’s technological news or discussion of technology, it probably belongs here.
Remember the overriding ethos on Beehaw: Be(e) Nice. Each user you encounter here is a person, and should be treated with kindness (even if they’re wrong, or use a Linux distro you don’t like). Personal attacks will not be tolerated.

I was wondering the same, especially as the article doesn't mention any numbers or the like. But I didn't want to change the original title.
I mean technically yes? There's kind of a post pandemic return to normal still going on, and before that there were consistent record low crime rates for the first half of the 10s, so they're not that low, but they're still pretty low. Nowhere near as bad as the terrifying dark ages of the 90s.
I'm not convinced that cameras and Nextdoor are having a material impact on the vague idea of "trust between neighbors," but I admit it's hard to gauge because I only have my own experience, which exists on a potentially wide spectrum.
I'm barely on Nextdoor and was surprised to hear there's apparently a pretty common use of it for public shaming. The potential for petty community conflict does seem heightened by some of these technologies.
The few times I've gone on nextdoor it's just a bunch of people asking for plumbers, contractor, ECT. It seems like the most mundane social media possible. But I'm in more of an urban area, maybe it's worse in the suburbs.
Around here it is a lot of that, then add "Did you hear gunshots" Everytime a car backfires or fireworks go off even slightly out of season. Oh and a fuckton of hate for houseless people.
