I'm fine with mods saying 'try not to be an asshole, okay?' and handing out brief bans for anyone who fails the vibe-check.

What worries me are the fools who say 'never be rude ever!,' but have no assistance, spend no time skimming threads, and so resort one-strike permabans for saying 'shut up, bigot.' That is so much harder for everyone to deal with, including them, and all it does is shield minimally-cautious trolls.
