As every day goes by it gets even scarier going to the states. I know I won’t be going in my lifetime.

I've flown twice this week and fly pretty much monthly to the USA. This was happening 2 years ago. Some sketchy plain clothes guy holding an iPhone as I board the plane with a badge that says FBI has taken my picture a few times. But lately there are small iPad type things next to the boarding counter coming back to Canada. You simply look at it and it verifies you.

Also... Our Canadian passports have our picture digitally embedded in chip that they read at the border to verify your identity. Better believe that is copied and stored along with your biometrics

Scary stuff, I am almost 70 and have not been for decades. I doubt I will ever go again.

Neither were some of the German people for the nazis during WWII. Does not change that it is literally becoming a fascist Country at the speed of light.

I went yesterday and met some of the nicest people. Upper state NY have great people and they're not all anti-Canadian. I even saw Canadian flags in windows while driving through several small towns. Americans are not the guilty ones, it's their fucking president that deserves the scorn from everyone.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 hours ago

Hmm, and how did the president get there? It's tragic for those poor innocent people who had nothing to do with it

I just got back from Seattle. 30 percent discount on my hotel because I'm Canadian and everyone was especially friendly. Border crossing took 1 minute both directions.

I only went because the band I worship was playing, else I wouldn't have.

Understandable. How else are you going to hear your favourite band? Sometimes we have to do what's hard because it's important

I didn't tell any friends or anyone at work to avoid drama. Went alone. Worth it.

The devil is in the details. The US is just using the border as a development/testing pool of victims that have essential zero rights to protest or object to whatever is done.

Once perfected, this will be implemented by all US institutions - driving license, automobile registration, health insurance, and eventually every American will have their facial biometric on file. Get caught on any of the billions of surveillance cameras, instant recognition and identification. Post a photo in any social media platform, the government knows who you are. Critical of government policies? There will be no such thing as anonymity. This is truly 'big brother'.

So, go across the border into the US? You are identified for life, and your movements can be traced, even in Canada through any social media post with your picture, by US agents. Even from a crowd scene photo.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I think >80% of US Americans currentlybhave biometrics on file. Anyone who got a photo ID got sucked up years ago.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Having your picture taken and placed on file is one thing. Doing bio analysis of your facial features and recording THAT is quite another. The difference between a finger print and just a photo of your hand.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

They're called biometric photos for a reason. They're very specific and sufficient for getting a fingerprint of facial features.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 18 hours ago

They are called 'biometric' because they are 'metric' - a mathematical model of the face, not just a photo of the face. They take features of the face and insert them into an algorithm and out pops a number that completely represents the face. That number can be compared to a number for any other face, no matter what the position or orientation of the face, and determine if it is the same face.

Actually, I am a lot more interested in the daily hive. Has anyone experienced reading it long enough to detect its bias? Looks like an interesting independent Canadian news outlet, but little information on its financial backing.

Seems they're Center-Left, Mostly Factual, and High credibility.. but that's one site, I'm gonna check others (but likely won't be updating this, tbh)..

I did a search. Seems Moses Znaimer owns it. Olympus Media. I am not the best at digging but this is where I ended.

What a shithole. Can't imagine I'll ever go back now, glad I got to see some beautiful places before they completely gut them.

Sad to see what that country is becoming.

I honestly feel the same level of worry about going to the states now as going to china when that cell hone executive got arrested

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

My mom drove my brother and I in a factory converted camper, 67 ford econoline over 3 extended summers to about 40 states. It was a different time and culture that is totally unrecognizable today.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago

I recently travelled for work to the US (air not ground), and I was able to opt-out of facial recognition. I'm sure that won't be an option forever, but if anyone has to travel in the short term and is concerned, you probably can opt-out.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago

Not to downplay this, but you had to assume this and far worse was already happening, even before Trump 2

I stopped going in the 90’s when I drove to Florida for the umpteenth time since late 70’s and in almost every major city I went through had couches, garbage and a whole bunch of other detritus all over the highways. Just trying to enlighten others.
