fandom.com has always been a pile of barely usable garbage. More projects should follow and self host a wiki again.

a core issue for moving wikis is that Fandom refuses to delete the old wiki so you 1) have to fight an SEO war against them; and 2) have to contend with directing everyone to the right place or else you have two competing wikis (one of which will gradually lapse out of date). it's very irritating.

The Path of Emilie community made an extension to remove fandom from Google results and automatically link to the real wiki. Hopefully more communities make something similar.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How can one follow on that path of Emilie?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I believe that extension is mentioned in the OP

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 year ago (3 children)

wait. they have something in their Terms of Service that prevents you from deleting stuff you posted? That sounds illegal.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago

i'm pretty sure this is because of two things: 1) they actually host the wikis and the administrators of them simply steward them; and 2) everything is licensed under CC-BY-SA anyways, so you don't retain the right to revoke things you contribute or the right to move the wiki.

It almost certainly is in the EU.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Not if their ToS makes you surrender your copyright to them.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That is not legally possible in the EU. You can grant irrevocable usage rights, but you cannot give away your copyright.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Most Terms of Service don't do that, instead asking you to provide a "perpetual" "irrevocable" "transferable" license for your content -- and while some absolutely stretch the terms to allow them to use it for things like language model learning or shifty monetization practices, such a license is also legally necessary for the website to function at all.

For "open-source" websites like Wikipedia or OSM, the terms are usually even simpler - you agree to license your posts under the same license that they use to distribute it.

As for Fandom specifically, they seem to mostly operate on the latter model -- though you still need an additional commercial use waiver if you want to submit to NC or ND-licensed wikis (which once again goes into the "legally necessary" box).

The same open-source license that lets people edit the wikis and fork them to independent websites without having to ask permission from every single contributor also lets Fandom admins reject attempts to delete or redirect pages.

A gdpr request on content you create but do not own just anonymizes the references to who created and edited the articles you contributed to

I don't see Fandom winning these wars when their site is so bloated with ads. Whenever I end up there I immediately want to leave.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

ugh yeah. especially the SEO war thing, the new website doesn't even register on DuckDuckGo yet. at least there's this extension called Indie Wiki Buddy which will hide Fandom results from search engines and redirect you to an independent wiki if you end up on Fandom anyway

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What if there are no alternative wikis?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

it redirects you to BreezeWiki, a no-bloat frontend for Fandom (example)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Hm, I guess it's an alternative. I'll give it a try. The Fandom & Fextralife wikis constantly being at the top search results often pisses me off.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Hmm. Is there something against linking external wikis on every article you create?

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

they'll revert that and ban you for "vandalism" (i assume they have automated sensors for checking this), and/or turn your wiki over to new administrators.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Unless you’re careful about it, they ban you.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It "should" be as easy as a global template inclusion kinda like how wikipedia does donations, but i wouldn't be surprised if fandom doesn't allow that to happen

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Wikipedia uses CentralNotice which fandom doesn’t allow individual wikis to configure. But there’s https://community.fandom.com/wiki/Help:Site_notice

The only thing more rage-inducing than getting stuck in a game and needing to Google the information I need... is finding that information on a Fandom Wiki composed of 90% ads and 10% useful content. Especially since I'm usually searching for that information on my phone, due to not all games handling Alt+Tab particularly well, and Fandom is somehow even worse on a phone. I have genuinely had moments where I've just closed a game and stopped playing because the information I need isn't in the game but has to be found on a Fandom Wiki.

SEO wars only go so far when the user experience on Fandom is so awful that plenty of players would rather scroll down to use the #2 entry in the search results if it means not having to click a Fandom link. They'd only need a few occasions when the #2 entry is a better experience than using Fandom, and they'll start using the independent Wiki purposefully.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

what if someone pushes thousands of edits with random AI generated garbage from thousands of accounts?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Unfortunately they're likely well equipped to deal with that kind of situation as it's not all that different than normal wiki vandalism.

[–] [email protected] 68 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Fandom is 95% popups at this point.

It looks pretty bad even with an adblocker on now too

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

It works for me, but I recall having to use Ublock's element zapper and custom rules to get around a lot of the shit they pull.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

In what way? The sidebar is possibly the only thing I can think of.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 7 months ago)
[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago

Oh indeed! But websites should still be borderline functional even without adblock.

I used fandom on my kid's new tablet (we were looking up video game stuff) and it was unusable, no exaggeration.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Use an adblocker (uBlock Origin)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Even with uBlock Origin installed, I find Fandom to have a very high proportion of ads. For a while I tried blocking them individually through uBlock's element zapper, but that proved a very short term solution. Too often, it worked only on that page and if I went to another entry on the same wiki, it would be loaded down with ads again. I gave up trying. uBlock is really good with ads on most sites, but Fandom has so many that uBlock can't get rid of them all.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Really? I don't see any ads at all on Fandom with ublock. Perhaps check if it's setup right.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It varies between browsers. On my phone (which is how I use Fandom most often - finding out information that ought to be in a game I'm currently playing), I've tried several different adblockers and none of them effectively de-ads Fandom. On desktop, Firefox with ublock is generally okay, but Chrome with ublock always has a couple of ads that try to sneak through.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh wow it's so much better. Really hope more wikis follow suit

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I hope the OSRS wiki really influences others, that wiki is top quality, the best out there honestly. Fandom, fextralife and such can all die in a hole.

I am happy Weird Gloop have decided to host the Minecraft wiki.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah when the osrs wiki team moves I was thinking what's the difference but looking back the move was 100% needed. The new wiki is amazing

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago

Oh wow, good for them. Had a quick look and it looks like a really nice import of their old stuff.

Hopefully Fandom doesn't crush them with their seo monopoly stuff.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

Saw this useful browser extension linked on that page, redirects you away from fandom and hides those results in search: https://getindie.wiki/

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don’t think fandom will do much, remember Uncyclopedia?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

No, what happened?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Warframe next plz 🙏

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This might be going back a while, I haven't played or looked anything up in along time, but back in the early days was the minecraft wiki not already its own site. At what point did they move to fandom? It's good they're moving, but why did they ever go there in the first place?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

They were originally on Gamepedia, which got bought out by Fandom.
