This is stupid. There are two completely separate variables here.

Peer reviewers review publications as part of their service to their respective communities. Unpaid.

Peer reviewers are PAID by their respective industry for the fucking job that they perform for that industry. Paid.

Imagine saying that soup kitchen workers were paid one billion dollars last year. In reality, the soup kitchen workers WORK FOR FREE. They have OTHER JOBS in which they earn money.

This is divisive, disingenuous bullshit.

If this is seriously how cognitively deficient Lemmy is, then Lemmy is no better than Facebook.

Peer reviewers are expert volunteers. Peer reviewers are NOT paid to complete peer reviews. It is a form of volunteer work.

Peer reviewers DO hold jobs in their respective industries, and are PAID for their actual, non volunteer, jobs.

I had to double check what sub I'm on because of comments like yours talking about this like it's not a meme/humor

The fact that this is published in the BMJ suggests to me that this is, in fact, an advertisement.

Wow they must be working so hard to earn all that money

The people doing the actual labor rarely receive a meaningful portion of that sum
